How are monotubs possible?
    #11262737 -

My jars of WBS are almost colonized and I’m about to make my monotub and substrate (coir/coffee/verm). I’m pretty much confident in this project except for a few more unanswered questions about colonizing the substrate:

-We go through great lengths to keep our jars sterile so they can colonize, but when it comes to the substrate, we just throw a mixture of sub and mycelium into a plastic bin. I mean, as your dumping your sub and myc into the tub, mold spores CAN fall into the tub. I don’t understand how monotubs aren’t so easily susceptible to contamination if our jars are.

-I don’t plan on casing but how do I colonize my substrate correctly? Do I have to cover the entire monotub, which is clear, under a blanket? Or do I take tin foil and cover the entire layer of sub? Again, how is my sub not getting destroyed by contaminants during this process?

-I keep polyfil in the holes during colonization too, right?

just do it fast some spray lysol.  i put my tub into a trash bag to keep air out during colonization. look in about 5 days you should be at least 1/2 way colonized

There is a huge amount of hungry mycelium that is going to attack your bulk sub and overwhelm a few mold spores.

I put them in a plastic bag to colonize. Clean, neat, easy.

The polyfil does nothing while the tub is in the bag, but it's easier to have it in place already. Or not. Ok either way.

The myc is contam resistant when its 100% on the WBS and you pasteurize the Bulk sub

Opening a tub often means expecting larger contamination risk, that is what the plexiglass is for.  Another thing is, dirt doesn't rot but food does.

Bulk substrates such as manure also contain a beneficial bacterial flora that helps ward off contaminates such as other bacterial invaders and some molds. That is partly why we pasteurize bulk substrates, and not sterilize them.

^^^ agreed, but skip the plexiglass and get a clear tub with a clear lid. It's a hassle to find, but great to work with.

Competitors are severely disadvantaged, in that usually 25% of the bulk sub (at the least) is comprised of live mycellium.  That, and defensive myc-friendly thermophilic bacteria make it pretty tough for organisms starting from spores to gain a foothold.

i have four 106qt tubs so i need to make TONS of substrate. is there anyway to make my substrate little by little (a gallon a day), and somehow be able to preserve it until its time to put in the monotub?

also, why put the monotubs in plastic garbage bags? now were cutting off air completely, leaving stale air in there.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

When colonizing, they don't need any fresh air, just gas exchange.  I guess the trash bag is sufficient in still providing this?
