do i need to pastuerise
    #11262141 - 10/16/09 07:32 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Well, im making bulk sub tonight for a monotub, i'm using cow poo and straw in a 50/50 mix.  My question is since i am using composted black cow brand store bought cow manure(i know i know, it's all i have RIGHT NOW)do i need to pastuerize since there is no fire fang in my manure?  Can't i just boil the stuff for 20 minutes or so in a pillow case just to get it sterile instead of trying to carefully monitor this huge tub of shit to keep it below 170

I just bring to field capacity then load into jars and boil till there at 145 then turn off the heat an hour later done.

I have experimented a few times with not pasteurizing and it has not contamed on me. Plus doesn't the store bought manure come pasteurized?

i'm not sure if its already patuerized or not.  I can tell you that i am epicly fucking this up i think....i have all the poop and straw in a pillow case in a huge pot full of spring water, and i'm slowly raising the temps trying to get near 150.

What Shea said.  Don't sterilize, it's just a welcome mat for the first contam that sets in to dominate your substrate.  Those thermophilic bacteria are your friends in this regard.  That's why pasteurizing is recommended.

Just heat the pot to the extent that the internal temp of the substrate reaches 140, and cut the heat.  That should be all you need for this.

For future reference A really easy way is like I said just get your sub to field capacity then load into jars foil lid them put the jars into the PC fill the pc with COLD water 2/3 way up the jar stick a meat thermometer into one of the jars into the middle then put the stove on High lets it boil till the meat thermometer reads around 140 turn off the heat. and monitor the temps and keep them between 140-160

turn the heat off when it reaches 140 and hold the temp between 140-160 for an hour. also you have to wait till it reaches field capacity now

Well, if you want to do everything you can to prepare a good substrate for your myc and optimize your outcome, yeah, pasteurize it properly..

You say you're fucking everything up, but you probably aren't. Not much you can do wrong pasteurizing it, except maybe making a big mess.
140-180 is a pretty wide range. I'm sure you'll manage.

well i defenitly made a huge mess, shit everywhere.  the bulk is cooling and straining in my massive colander, and my 7 creeper jars are standing by.  this stuff already feels like it's cooled dramatically so as soon as its room temp , i'm gonna start mixing in my spawn.  Thanks for the help guys, i think i made this hard on myself so far, could've been easier had i taken my time.  Looks like i'll be at field capacity and room temp in the next half hour.

You'd be surprised how long the center will remain hot. I'd check the center temperature before using it.
