Agaricus question
    #11261687 - 10/16/09 08:02 PM (8 years, 3 days ago)

So i picked a bunch of what i thought to be Agaricus campestris today from a local park, but i noticed they were staining yellow where i scratched or damaged them. they have pink gills, have a chocolate brown spore print, dont smell bad, but on http://www.mushroomexpert.com/agaricus_campestris.html it says that A. campestris doesnt bruise yellow. I have one that has a pink discoloration on the top half of the stem then a yellowish discoloration on the bottom half. i want to start dinner so if anyone has any knowledge to lay down please do.

They do stain a little. http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/gallery/DisplayBlock~bid~5482~gid~~source~gallerydefault.asp

If it smells mushroomy, you're good.

they stain to the point where its almost a neon yellow. anywhere i scratch or cause damage. like i went over it in a highlighter. ive split some of the stems open and they smell bad. like how i imagine ink or chemicals would smell like, but the caps smell nice and mushroomy. so i have no clue im just going to throw these thirty away that i picked.

Agaricus xanthodermus is the most common mushroom in California right now.

I found hundreds today, literally pushing up the pine needles in big bumps with several dozen fruit bodies.

yeah its probably a toxic agaricus then. maybe Agaricus xanthodermus. I find mine in large yields like that too, a hundred or so growing in a circle under every tree, pushing up from under the soil. well thank you for the clarifications. wish me luck on finding some edibles :]
