Adding hpoo to my bulk... question.
    #11261232 - 10/16/09 06:49 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Ok, here is my usual method of bulk sub, monotub style:
brick coir
qt worm castings
qt verm
qt coffee
pint gypsum

I just ordered 5 lbs of dried hpoo from one of the sponsors, mycosupply.this stuff

Now how should i go about my ratios?
Should i remove something and add poo, leave it and just add the poo, or just do a hpoo/coir/verm mix?
I'm also not sure as too the volume of the hpoo (1 pound) after rehydration.

Janine Melnitz: Oh, that's very fascinating to me. I read a lot myself. Some people think I'm too intellectual but I think it's a fabulous way to spend your spare time. I also play raquetball. Do you have any hobbies?

Dr. Egon Spengler: I collect spores, molds, and fungus.

Take this with a grain of salt.
You seem to have a good mix already. There are a million ways to do it and yours doesn't look bad.
Now you are adding hpoo. No problems with that.
What you may want to consider is simply making sure that your pasteurization technique is good. Simply adding hpoo isn't a problem and you should experiment with it until you find what works best for you and your style. With the addition of the poo, you may find that you have more substrate than you intended. So what I would ask myself is this; do I want to make enough for two tubs (or whatever) or do I only want enough for one? If the answer is one, then I might lay my brick of coir on edge and split it up using a screwdriver or something in order to cut back on the coir. The rest of your ratio looks fine. Just replace the coir with the poo. You might find that you will want to add more verm to the mix using poo as well. It does good things and aerates the mix to some degree also.
Basically, poo isn't going to change things that much and is always a good addition so just wing it and I'm sure that you will be fine.
IMHO, your pasteurization is the most critical thing when working with new substrates. You can't just do hpoo like you do coir. You really need to get it right.
Hope this helps.

Actually it does. I always half-assed my pasteurization. I will look into it more.
How much volume does, say, 1 lb of the hpoo come out to? thats the part that im trying to plan ahead for. Coir takes up alot of space, much to my surprise the first time doing bulk.

A dry pound or a pound at field capacity?

If you get that poo, and it is not completely dry, they are cheating you out of weight.

If you have problems with contams, take out the coffee.

I add 2-3 qts verm for each brick coir. If I have poo, I substitute it for some amount of coir. Half and half is the most I usually do. I substitute only because that formula gives me the depth I want for my mono.

What is your tub size?
