The rotting log also appears to be maple.

I wish to apologize for three things in posting this:

1. I must apologize for the time it took me to get the pics. This was partly due to the weather and partly to my lack of a camera.

2. I must apologize for the quality of the pics, as I had not the time to mess with the white balance. Every minute or so I heard the shot of a .22 rifle and periodic fire of a shotgun. Despite the shots only being practice for the coming deer season, I was honestly afraid of getting shot.

3. I must apologize for committing the act of thread necromancy, one of the great sins of this forum.

Secondly, when observing the growth of this basidiocarp, it shot up from a pin to near that size in a matter of 5-7 days. Since my last observation, seven days passed. As you can see it has not grown much in that time. I wish to preserve the genes of this fungus, so I was wondering if I should wait further until it matures or bring the patch home so that I may make a culture. Thanks much and all the best.

Better, but still not that great.

EDIT: I decided to be crazy and brought home the piece of wood it was growing on. As soon as my agar comes in, I ill isolate some mycelium and spawn to woodchips
