use RRs tek for wbs also, its the only one that works for me, the rest contam for some reason.
other people get differant teks to work but I cant.
I usr rye berries 90% of the time but when I use wbs I use RR grain prep just the same.

I use the one that Shea25 gave you the link to. Follow it to the T. I haven't had any problems from it at all.

http://www.shroomery.org/9030/Docs-Wild-Bird-Seed-Tek
this is the tek i use.
the only thing i do differently is NOT take out sunflower seeds and floaters but i still RINSE A LOT.
there was a thread a while back about weather or not to remove floaters. someone ( Agar mabey? don't remember ) took out the floaters ( mostly sunflower ) and put in a seperate jar. the jar with the floaters colonized faster than the 'cleaned out' wbs and mixed. i repeated this experiment twice myself and had the same results. so less work, more diverse material, faster colonization. works for me anyway.
one problem i have found with the simmer teks is that if your WBS has a lot of cracked corn in it, it releases a ton of starch and makes it sticky. it can be easily rinsed with cold water but then it's too cold to allow the moisture to evaporate from the outer shells and such. the local brand i was using worked fine with this tek then somewhere along the way they started using tons of cob and cracked corn. i've tried drying with a fan and simmering for shorter times but it still gets too wet outside and stalls or too dry inside. now i'm just looking for a cheap brand thats all milo, millet, sunflower and such.
so there ya go. now everyone can see i've put WAY too much time and energy into WBS and will probobly continue to waste my precious time with simple shit instead of not letting my agar completely over-run their plates or fine tune the GH.
sorry rant done.

I agree. Due to rising grain prices, many WBS producers have been adding more and more cracked corn, or smashed corn rather, and other garbage to their product to keep prices down.
I used to use a store brand from a national chain store, and it worked great. The last time I bought a bag it was almost all CC when it used to not have any at all. When I tried to use it, it just turned into a mass of starchy goo. I had to, well, feed the rest of the bag to the birds.

I like soaking, it works better for me. I cut lots of time out by drying the seed with paper towels, rather than waiting for it to evaporate/drain to an acceptable moisture lvl.

Even when using wbs without cracked corn, you'll want to rinse the grains very well at least twice. This removes dust and other crap that might cause it to stick. Using very hot water in the rinse helps to make sure the grains don't sprout on you in the soak. Stir the grains in a big pot with water a few inches over the top. Drain and repeat until it's no longer dirty.
Adding gypsum to the soak water helps to keep the grains from sticking when they are PC'd. Gypsum is also one of the most important mushroom additives because of what it supplies.
I believe simmering grains helps hydrate them, but my experience is with rye. It's important to stir frequently to make sure that the grain doesn't get over-cooked. Heating the grain also helps to get the moisture content right when draining. The hot grains steam off moisture quickly when tossed. If you can pick up a handful and they spill-out individually and there's no visible wetness to the grains, they are ready to use.

Some say rye is better. I think they are probably about the same.
I think WBS is more common because rye can be difficult to find and is usually more expensive.

I agree rye is great and better but it's harder to find.
I get finch food for 9.47 for 10lbs that like 94 cents per pound
But I can get rye for 22.28 for 25lbs which is like 89 cents per pound

See I get the finch food cause it seems to be cleaner and there is usually not alot of sunflowers in it.. I can get cheap WBS for around 60 cents I think but I don't like using it.
