Cake Dilemma
    #11260094 - 10/16/09 01:48 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

So A foaf recently made about 30 cakes in two terrariums.  Humidity runs at about 95% constantly at 75 degrees.  Cakes are made from wbs, rolled and dunked and knocked up with B+. They are 2nd generations and were allowed to consolidate about 10 days after being 100%.  The terrariums are shot gun with about 3-5 inches of perlite in each one.  Cakes are 1 pint btw....

He has been using wbs now for well over a year but he still averages about 2-2.5 grams dried per cake.  After seeing tons of grows on here were people are averaging 3-4grams per cake he is starting wonder what is wrong with his methods.  He noticed that many successful cake grows are using brf.  Is this because they have so much Verm in them to hold moisture?  If you were him what would you do to improve yields?

BRF and verm in my option will outperform WBS in cake forms using standard 1/2 pint jars. Theres alot of nutrients in BRF. but using whole grains like WBS in cakes I dont think could match BRF

I would go to using BRF and verm. Use 2 parts verm to 1 part BRF and 1 part water add 1 table spoon of gypsum per 5 jars. Use 1/2 wide mouth jars .

I have been averaging 7 grams per cake

oh sorry.  I reread your post and got my answer from it.  How noticeable is the gain from gypsum in production?

gypsum is an additive not to be substituted for grains or BRF you add it to either one your doing at around a 5-10% ratio

Colonized WBS is better off being used to spawn bulk substrates.

You will get more bang out of your WBS this way.

I read somewere on here that it reduces stickiness in the grain and that it adds minerals.  Are those its only functions?

Thanks for the advice RR.  Ive been reading tons of post by you latetly.  I would like my friend to master Cakes first before he goes on....

That was Roadkill not RR,  gypsum aids in the development of mushrooms(bigger) and helps grains from clumping together

to master cakes go here http://www.mushroomvideos.com/ watch all the BRF tek videos add 1 tablespoon of gypsums per 5 jars and your set

Few tips, Grind your own BRF,let them colonize at room temp, use a 6500k light bulb(called daylights or cool blues)and keep it only a few inches away from the terrarium

I'm not RR...

RR is RogerRabbit.

lol

If you are going to do cakes...

do BRF/Verm cakes, they will out proform WBS cakes greatly.

You are getting low yeilds due to the lack of nutrients in the WBS.

I can get anywhere from 8 to 11 dry grams out of one 1/2 pint BRF/Verm cake.

Oh, Im sorry RK.  I have ready hundreds, if not thousands of posts from both of you so its easy to mix you guys up....

I noticed that the pf tek uses verm as the contam barrier.  What if my foad used plain old polyfill lids instead?  Would he run into problems?

Also he would still like to  do g2g transfers from wbs. Is that a possibility.  Would he still be able to shake them up aswel?

Use the dry verm. got to remember the PF uses 4 inoculation points that 4 holes in the lid. It would be alot easier to stick with the dry verm barrier instead of polyfilling 4 little holes that are the right size for Gas exchange and for allowing the needle to innoc the jar

He would like to, if possible just stick to his tried and true polyfill lids.  He would like to just use the brf as a jar to transfer to, not really not knock up.

He's not sure if this is possible, hes just trying to stick to what he knows as much as possible at this point.

Then stick with grains and forget about the whole PF tek

and what are you talking about dry verm barrier is tried and true as well

Make an LC and do whole grains

But why wouldn't a polyfill lid work with one whole in the middle?  He doesn't want to inoculate, just do g2gs on.  By using wbs as a master he could take advantage of its many inoculation points but then take advantage of brfs yield after the transfer...

I understand that the verm layer is tried and true but arnt polyfill lids?  Please excuse my noobness if Im missing something here...

Grain to grain transfers are perfect for well whole grains because you shake the jars and distribute the myc covered grains transferring to the tops of BRF cakes not really the same. Might as well just stick with grains altogether instead of using the 2 teks together. You can innoc alot more jars with a fully colonized grain jar then a PF jar

So brf cakes really arnt shakable is what your telling me?  Seems like if they arnt it would take muuuchhh longer to colonize.

They often do take longer and Pf jar usually arnt shakable. You can get more mileage out of a grain jar for transfers then a Pf jar.

Thats why its called G2G  Grain to grain not grain to PF

Thank you sir...that answered my questions.  I really do appreciate it!

Looks like it might be time to move on to the next step with WBS.  He loves it because its cheap and easy to find year round.  I'm thinking Miracle grow moisture control with 50% verm will be a great place to start.  Any recommendations?
