 Mushroom Hydroponics

Hydroponics work great for plants and is a fairly simple way to grow.It seems it would be firly simple to do Hydroponics for mushrooms as well.The ebb&flow hydroponics mehthod with cake floating on a base of some kind would work well.a drip system could also be used.All this can be done very cheaply achiving super results.any one have any experiences of there own hydroponics.

I am dont think this would work as it would be prone to contamination because havent you noticed the green slime that develops on the rockwool when growing plants this way. It would just be a bad idea Me thinks you should just keep to the standard methods.

Mushrooms grow on a substrate not a nutrient formula.
It won`t work.

i think with shrooms there is no need for an active hydro system because not as much water evaporates from using 1000 watt hps lamps and the like. if you put verm on the bottom of your casing that is like a passive system, same with setting your cakes on wet perlite(wick system). maybe if you had a huge casing growing huge monster shrooms they would drink enough to require an active system.

Mushrooms absorb nutrients from their surrounding environment. Dead and decaying matter are absorbed by the mycelium network and mushrooms produced. This nutrition cannot be supplied in water, and besides, they use the dead and decaying substrate matter as a structure for growth. Not a rediculous thought, but I believe it is not possible.

Ahhhh hydroponic mushrooms... isn't that right up there with King Solomon's Mines.
Hydro is for plants, mushrooms are not plants-sorry.
What theoretical advantages would a hydro shroom set up have??
You could automate watering via the Straw Tek.

My idea of hydroponic shrooms (I will try this soon) is to case some grain or poo in an unglazed terracotta pot sitting in a dish of water, hopefully the huge availability of water will lead to monster flushes.

A simply search of the site for the word "hydro" will prove you wrong jack ass. I'm not opposed to people finding novel ways of growing shrooms. Or even novel ways of arguing the semantics to prove that cultivation of vermiculite based caskes is technically hydroponic because by definition it uses no soil, but you my friend are making claims as if they are true, with absolutely no research to back them up.
Rethink your posting methods, or stick to overgrow.com and plants not fungi.

These were "bottom" watered. Not hydro by any means.
Polyfiber filter fabric in the pot bottoms (as a wick), a 1/2 inch layer of perlite, seed/grain spawned compost above that. Pots were set in about 1/4 inck of water.

Just a few questions about this bottom watering:
1. Do you tend to get better yields from bottom watering?
2. What is this polyfiber filter fabric (where can you get it) and how does it help at all? Does it whick the water upwards?
3. Just to make sure - there is no casing layer at all?

the growing of plants in nutrient solutions with or without an inert medium to provide mechanical support
The nutrients are supplied by the liquid nutrient solution. I can't see how this would work with shrooms- esp cubensis.

I know hydro shroomz seem a bit odd lol but i also wona play a bit with this idear.I was thinking of boiling up some ground brown rice then straining it and soaking 4" rockwool blocks in it.As im sure the mycelium would like rockwool as a medium
if it contained food,as by nature its airy and open(ideal for mycelium)
Could also try the same thing but boil up some paper instead of b/r strain then soak for wood lovers.this will just be a side project for no real reason but that i can  lol
I think rockwool would be easy to sterilize with out lossing shape as its made under very high temps in construction.

I am assuming people are asking (in 2002, but it was bumped up and relates to another recent post) about growing mushrooms (the actual mushrooms) in a liquid substrate. It can be done on a surface culture; you can get a few little tiny mushrooms to grow out of the top of a liquid culture, but it's really inefficient; not worth doing, IMO. WAY too much work for WAY too little a product.

people don't understand that mushrooms are not plants, and do not photosynthesize to get their energy for growth. Hydroponics rely on that and the root system wicking nutrients. Mushrooms will wick nutrients through their mycellial mat, but not in that fashion, and not without a decent surface to fruit off of (think microclimate, in valleys). I mean sure, there will be the occasional ones that fruit on agar, or in a liquid culture. But they aren't plentiful, or all too common, and definantly are not robust.

Would mycellium germinate off of a sponge or foam that was soaked in nutrient solution? Would the mycelium be able to absorb the nutrients from the liquid solution in the sponge or would it attempt to decompose the (absent) nutrients from the sponge?
