FAE and misting (1st grow)
    #11254282 -

Alright so my jars are real close to full colonization (at least a few are), and I'm having some worries about maintaining them once they're birthed.

They're incubating in my terrarium, which is just a typical storage container/bin in my closet. It has no holes in it. Here's my concern: it is my first grow and I keep seein other newbs postin up pics of terrible looking shrooms and all kinds of problems. I'm a student so I'm gone from real early till about 3:15 most days.

Will a few mists and fannings in the small time I'm home be sufficient? Should I put holes in the terrarium (like a shotgun? note: the majority of the terrarium will not be covered in perlite, only about half)?? I have 12 cakes, I was gonna spawn 4 or 5 to bulk and just fruit the other cakes. Will one way or the other be better accommodating to my situation?

Also note the lid will probably be off every night, all night for the light (unless I can fit the light in there some way).

Any input is appreciated.

You could go shotgun, works great.  Although, that should be enough fanning and misting shouldn't be nessasary w/ perilite (it can cause aborts as well).  Cover the whole bottom in perilite too I'm not sure half will get the humidity high enough.

The bulk or fruiting cakes is ur call.

The lid off thing will decrease humidity significantly and I'm not sure is a good idea for contams when your cakes have already gone through a few flushes.  Walmart carries some cheap completely clear sterilite brand tubs.

Monotub. Set it and foget it. Good for the busy mycologist...

Oh? Whats so advantageous about a monotub?

And I have two glass pieces I was thinkin about covering it with at night which would only leave a little crack on top...

I have a light installed inside my FC so I don't have to take the lid off.

Shitty pics and its inactive while colonizing but ya.

Oh yeah, as I'm reading this I'm contemplating throwin in all my cakes for a monotub, but I realized, 6 cakes have inner reservoirs... idk if that makes a difference but I was gonna fruit those. Plus the jars are growing at very different rates from each other due to my sloppy inoc jobs

It takes less playing with! You're the one who asked dude. It went like this:

YOU: I can't do this because of yadda, yadda, yadda. What should I do?

Slimz (speaking from experience): Oh, well if your having issues with yadda, yadda, yadda, just spawn to a mono-tub.

YOU: OH, really? Why?

Haha alright! I'm not doubting or arguing anyone, just trying to understand why u can set it and forget it with a monotub

Because the deep substrait and casing(if you use one) has enough moisture in it to keep high enough RH and the holes in the mono allow for proper FAE to wick moisture off the sub to initiate pinning and healthy fruits

The lack of ability to provide high RH and a high rate of FAE (depending both on how many cakes, and the size of the storage bin) lets say using an automated system will defiantly impact the fruits. A high rate of maintenance will combat this. You could just use the storage bin with perlite and minimal venting. Calibrate the fruiting chamber with a digital Temp/RH therm, then fan/mist as much as you can to keep it optimal.

Your overall question was will not being there to do this impact your fruits? Yes, it sucks. You may just want to do what Slims said and do a mono. Then you can turn those jars to spawn, increase your fruiting ability and have minimal maintenance.

Mono:

The design of substrate level holes for FAE vs the enclosed rest of it, create a perfect environment of FAE and humidity (given your substrate was correctly hydrated) to "set it, and forget it". Then I dunk the sub after each flush and repeat as often as possible.

Monotubs are definitely the way to go, but I wouldn't attempt it until you give the cakes a chance on their own first. Build a shotgun terrarium. It's easy, cheap, and low-maintenance. If a couple weeks go by and your yield is low or nonexistent, then I would crumble your cakes and spawn them to a monotub with a 50/50 coir/verm substrate with some coffee grounds mixed in.

I am a new grower and I have had MUCH better success with the monotub than with cakes -- but it opens the door for more contams so you have to be more clean than you would just birthing them onto some perlite or something.

you can go mono, but i am a busy student as well...
i use a shotgun FC, and i put it next to a window so it gets light, and i mist and fan before i leave in the morning, and i mist and fan AS SOON AS I GET HOME...i also do it once before bed... i leave mostly by 8-830am and am home by about 6pm...on average
shotgun FC will be easier, considering where you are at now, but if you dont have a light source forget it and do the mono

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll still have to figure it out, cuz i think it is a good idea to fruit a few cakes since this is only my first grow, but I don't wanna fuck around with the cakes when theres bulk. I'm lookin for  multiple ozs.

Here's the setup.

Does it look like enough light is getting through this lid? It looks hardly translucent without the light:

But it looks like a lot gets through with the light on:

Another side view for whatever its worth:

I'm wondering if i'm gonna lose color temp or anything with keeping the lid on with the light on top like this.

Im sure its enough. Why dont you cut out a circle and lay some clear plastic or plexiglass then put the lamp on that

7am-3pm would be 8 hours unattended. Not too big a deal. It will fruit.

But would probably be more optimal and require less maintenance with a few small holes. You could just drill a few at sub level and drill a few higher; cover with micropore tape. Then you don't have to worry so much about rushing home to fan. Another option would be a fish pump w/ bubble stone and small container of water.

Putting the light so close will work good. I wouldn't worry about it passing thru plexiglass.

Cool, thanks. I kinda figured that'd work.

I have a 1/4 pint that should be done in no more than a week, that'll serve as my tester to see if the conditions are suitable.

About micropore tape. This is just to keep contams out right? Is it essential when you have holes in your FC?

I would not use Micropore tape at sub level it holes and could wick contams use poly fill or tyvek

Not a great idea to let them sit in a fruiting chamber before crumbling, either fruit them from cakes or crumble, but don't wait or you're introducing too many contaminates.  Also, no point in a 50/50 coir verm mix, just go with straight coir and toss in some coffee grounds.  Coir doesn't need the verm to hold water or keep it from becoming compacted, so don't waste your time/money.

So no need to cut coir w/ verm at all?
