Before April 2005 when the Combat Upgrade was released? I was just remembering how great the game was from june 03 - april 05. They're working on an emulator version for the original, but it's still only in beta now, not much to do.
I'd like to play with you guys on it if you were fans.

I would definitely play the pre-CU version! I had only been playing for about 3 months when it came out so I always felt like I missed out on really getting to enjoy the game while it was good. Do you have any links or other information about the emulator?

www.swgemu.com but you might have to download the separate patch files for patch 1 - 14. Also to get the EMU launcer go to www.launchpadenhanced.com that lets u connect to the beta and it will check to make sure you have the right patch files.
Don't use the SOE official launcher. And if you don't have the game you can just get the SWG trial and it'll work for EMU.

Yeah I played since day 1 up to CU and when everything went downhill. I've been checking up on swgemu for quite a while now and am patiently waiting for it to be finished.

Do you ever log in and try the beta out?

I did like a week ago. It's awesome that there's so much stuff already implemented but it's just beta and all the progress will be wiped out anyway. There's plenty of testers on anyway.

Yeah I was already planning on starting some type of drug inspired guild with our own city. I'm going to have a smuggler character for making drugs and I'll re-name them to real drug names lol. (moun gold will be called LSD for example because it enhances mind)
And yes it's free to whoever asked that.

Cool, I used to play pre-CU SWG. I remember that I had like 100k exp to go to get jedi right with the CU came out.

I think that happened to a lot of people. CU was so dumb... ruined the entire game.

Would someone care to explain what CU is and how it ruined the game?

CU stands combat update, some people call it the CR (combat revamp)
Before the CU, SWG had to skill tree based system where when you used a certain skill you got exp in that skill set. When you reached a certain amount of exp you can "buy" a skill proficiency level in that skill set. There where 4 skill tiers with 4 proficiency levels per tier and also a "master" proficiency level at the top of all the tiers. You could only "buy" a certian ammount of proficiency levels because each level also cost a certain ammount of character points (which you couldn't gain by doing stuff) which kept people from mastering every single skill. The system created an awsome culture of people experimenting and finding badass skill builds since a lot of the skill sets synergized with eachother.
When the CU came out, it turned the game into all the other MMORPGs where you could only work on one skill set that you started with when you created your character. Tons of diversity and fun was lost. On top of this, becoming an actual jedi before the CU was a mysterious journey that was full of a lot of rumours and supposed guides that lead to dead ends and took at TON of time to complete. After the CU, you simply had to choose Jedi as your starting profession.
Well, if that didn't confuse you then I don't know what will...

Yeah there's too many things to explain all the changes they made, cause they fucking changed EVERYTHING. But in short the original SWG was truely unique from any MMO out today. The combat used a "combat queue" similar to the single player of KOTOR, but was way more optimized than that. It's much better than the cooldown/warmup timers or whatever the fuck every other MMO uses. Plus this let you spam attacks which I think made the animations look sooo cool. So many skills and animations were taken out with the CU, it was really horrifying.
We had 32 profession that let you mix and match different combinations of them (for example you could be a master Amorsmith and master Weaponsmith at the same time). There was no level system, when you got experience you would learn a new skill one at a time. Lots of crafting professions so that practically everything was player made which let us have our own economies (Armorsmith, chef, doctor, architect, weaponsmith, tailor). Had a very complex crafting system that let us make all kinds of cool shit. Also there was rare loot that became extremely valuable (weapons with poison damage, exceptional weapons, legendary weapons, krayt pearls, krayt tissue) which made PvE worthwile.
Those are the major things I can think of, so with that on top of stuff the game already has (good graphics, fully customizable characters, player houses/cities, 20 person group capacity, etc.) Made it the best MMO to date.

Thanks for explaining all that. The game sounds awesome, I think I will definitely play when this swgemu is ready. What is the PvE like? Is there any sort of raiding or anything?
