Drafting a grow plan, could use some help..
    #11253174 - 10/15/09 03:21 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

So I'm new to this hobby and I've been reading here at the shroomery and the message boards for a couple months, researching before getting my feet wet.  I'm not really interested in doing brf cakes first, I'm planning on using wbs, which i understand is harder to get right, but i'm confident in the teks i've studied.  I want to case it in a mix of a *good* store-bought compost, coir and gypsum, and a casing layer of peat (or should i use the compost which contains peat?), virm, coir, and perlite).  I plan to use aluminum roasting pans (about 4.5" deep).  Will a monotub tek work to house the casings, or would i be better off following the tek and spawning right into the tub?  I'm hoping if I use the casings it will control contaminates better, but I worry that a monotub wont provide enough fac/rh.  I considered installing a tropical air/pump to a tub or two to insure good conditions.  Also, I read that brf has many nutrients that birdseed doesn't- is there a good way to add it to the mix without risking overlay?  Any guidance or suggestions is greatly appriciated ...

glad to see a noob going right to wbs.  follow a tek to the t and it should be good.  Heres a little hint for if you fuck it up and its too moist add some verm.  You should spawn to either CCV or POO.  I don't know too much about compost but CCV works great and you don't need a casing layer.  Also a casing layer i beleive leaves you more open to contaims.  aluminum trays are good i use them but the myc will eat right thru the foil  I would suggest doing a straight tub and just try to dial it in with a good hygrometer fyuck the airpump.  tubs are pretty much set and forget

Teks are there because they work (mostly). So follow the tek and if you do it should work out well.

Innovation comes with experience so get the basics down first.

monotubs and dubtubs are the easiest. i would even suggest a mini monotub, like a 5 gallon bucket..

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Thanks for the feedback, still not sure though- i kind of like the idea of fusing the monotub with a casing tek, but i didn't know about the myc eating the foil, that's a bitch.. is ccv coir coffe virm?  as a side note the compost i mentioned contains the following:
composted forest humus
sphagnum peat moss
pacific northwest sea-going fish emultion
crab meal
shrimp meal
earthworm castings
sandy loam
perlite
fossilized bat guano
granite dust
Norwegian kelp meal
oyster shell

I'm excited to put this bag to use, though i may have to modify the ph, it's hard to say.  like i said, i want to mix some coir to make a 50/50 mix or something close.  I thought of adding some coffee to this but nitrogen may not be a problem with all the nutrients already provided.  I'll be adding about 10% gypsum by volume.  Don't think i'll need any virm, but im not sure.

As far as I understand, the use of lime in a casing -the recipe i intend to use is 40& virm 40% ph adjusted peat 10% coir and 10% perlite, with a cup of gypsum per cup of peat and a tsp of lime per cup of peat-  keeps the ph high enough (7.5) to fight away contams but let myc through, though it may grow slower due to those conditions.  I'll definitely research CCV/no casing though, thanks again.

It looks alright(the compost) but why all the extra work when there are simpliar things?  CCV is coir coffee verm yes.  The compost just seems to me like extra steps and the more steps the more chances to fall IME

Again, I'd listen to truskool. If you've never grown before, why try the most difficult route first?

CCV and go... :imo:

Save the super duper secret special grow mix for your next grow. Kiss and all that. :2cents:  :goodluck:

I have learned, multiple times.. DO NOT TWEAK TEK's.. they work as is, because the other variations have not. Get wet with a good TEK, no matter what it is (FYI: Have never done a BRF cake).. you will be happy.

truskool is right on the money
