Some new ones. Need help 2ID.
    #11252113 - 10/15/09 10:34 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Habitat:
Large pile of white oaks. Western PA. Orangish Umber color mushroom. Caps are quarter size at this stage to dime size. No spore print yet. I will get it if we need to. Provided is the best pics I can get. I am learning more every day and will provide better terminology in the future as to stalk and underside observations. Since I am new to all of this, in the aspcet of piciking, any suggestions on harvesting so as not to damage future propigation of the species would be greately appreciated. Thanks you guys .
Gonzo

You can call them Galerina marginata if you want.

You wanted some suggestions on harvesting:
1.  When you pick, be sure to tap the cap to drop some extra spores.
2.  Unless needed for identification (ie. A. muscaria etc.) cut the base with scissors or a knife instead of ripping out the entire mushroom and along with it mycellium.
3.  Don't pick pins.

Well, by the time it's matured it will have dropped so many spores that it doesn't make a difference.

I've heard that too, and also once heard to bring a bucket of water, soak all mushrooms in the water, then pour it out around the area. Somehow supposedly the spores get in the water, then onto the ground. I've always thought it was nonsense, just wanted a second opinion

For number 2 you can simply just twist the mushroom as you pick it and avoid having to cut the stipe.

That is a great idea.  When you see a print on the top of a mushroom, you can wash those spores off into the water.  Also if you see grass/leaves that are covered with spores, toss that in the water too.  Pour the water on to fresh substrate in the appropriate habitat.
