Rot on my Trichocereus peruvianus
    #11252674 - 10/15/09 02:05 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

It seems one of my Peruvian Torch's is rotting on the top. Should I cut the infected part out with a sterile knife? Will it regrow if I cut it out? Any suggestions?

:peace:

Damn, that's one great looking torch, you better save it!

Don't wait too much and cut that infected area off, and cut until you only see healthy tissue, if you can you could try to save the growing tip, or just slice it off completely and leave it to pup.

Cut the rot out until you can see healthy tissue, then dust the cut are lightly with a fungicide. After that, I'd just hack off enough of the top of the cactus to try to root it and leave the base to inevitably produce pups. :yesnod:

Can I cut out the rot without using a fungicide? It's spreading and I don't want to lose it. I basically have to cut the top off now.

you can actually just slice the skin off and the rot will dry up.  I have done that and it turned out ok.

Just cut the top off, then it will pup - it will probably pup now anyways as the meristem is damaged. Just save having the ugly scaring..

And i would look at why it has gotten rot in the first place, its a weird place for a cactus to get rot - under normal conditions.

I'm thinking it might be because my friend ashed my pipe for some dumb reason on my cacti and I'm guessing a burning piece landed on it. That's all I can think of because it was 100% fine before he was over and did that. :foreheadslap:

I would just observe it then and if you see it spreading then lop it off.

Fix your friend while you are at it, get him to eat the bits you dissect - that'll teach him real good lol.

Well, just in order to throw some gas in the fire I'd say that is rather a bridgesiioid than a peruvianoid.

I know because I have a similar one, also sold to me as a peruvianus.

yeah the one to the left of it looks like a Peruvianus and also has that oval shape.
The one in question though looks to be a mix.

But in this case  thats a good thing as I bet the magic will be higher  :crazy2:

the spines don't convince me man. i don't think its bridgesii. the bridge spines tend to be more yellow at the top. those are still brown. either way he should just cut the top.

I think it looks more like a Browningia almost, although I'm 100% sure it's a trich.

Very nice no matter the gentics.

So I cut the top off. I don't have any fungicide but I'm hoping it will callus over and eventually pup.

I would not worry about fungicide if you cut it with an alcohol sterilized knife.

put a fan on it to dry it faster, ive cut out rot before and have never used fungicide, never had an issue with it spreading if I used a sterilized knife.

Nice. Yeah I wiped the blade really good with 99% rubbing alcohol before I cut the top off.
