Take another look at Milo (Sorghum)
    #11252513 - 10/15/09 01:43 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

It would seem like most of the shroomery has little experience with this grain besides the fact it is used in most wild bird seed. I have found Milo to be my grain of choice over rye, wheat, and wbs. I just wanted to put it back out there in the community to keep it in mind when selecting a grain to work with. Milo is uniform unlike wbs and quick and easy to prep. Milo is pretty sturdy and I have little burst grains and you can really shake these guys. I am not 100% but it would seem like they provide more  inoculation points then rye and wheat. The best part in my case is it is cheap and easy to acquire about $9 for 50lbs from local feed store. The thread here is one of the few discussing Milo and prompted my switch  http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7876862#7876862 .
However, I do not put as much work in the prep. I simply rinse twice with hot water. Add a touch of gypsum and weak coffee bring to a simmer for about 15-20min and check every 10min thereafter looking for grains that will split between my fingernails. I then spread  them on trays to dry for 45min to a hour. Load jar and pressure cook at 15 psi for 1 hour.
So far it has worked out great for me for about 30 jars with zero contamination. If you have access I would say give it a try. On a side note I seem to fall into the failed Mexicana A grows with a few rye jars. I have tried again recently and mexicana seems to really take to milo. I have a few mexicana experiments with Milo I will try to keep updated.

I am not calling for everyone to switch. I just wanted the info to be out there. I know everyone is sensitive about their grains preference. I have not intention of starting a which is better thread. I simply wanted to share my experience with milo. Hopefully someone will find it useful. I do not have access to pennington that everyone seems to use around here so in my case this is a better option.

AFOAF takes milo  rinses it once  then puts it in his jars and adds water and cooks away....i wonder what the ratio of water to grain would be if easy prepping like that  Not really on speaking terms with the guy so I can't really ask for my friend

I'm working with it right now and can also confirm this. After rinsing away sunflower and floaters, it's mostly milo with some millet and a few pieces of wheat and corn. I'm not sure about 80 percent milo, but probably over half.

No way.  Soak, simmer, drain, PC--- just like rye berries.

Sure. Figure an ideal moisture content and try it out. Should work ok. You'll want to shake the jars around to distribute the moisture while they are still hot.

But you'll probably get a better texture if you do the soak, simmer, strain routine.

If you rinse and then soak in a generous amount of water, then boil and strain, you won't need to worry about ratios. Plus, the soak will help prevent bursting of grains. You have to let it soak overnight, but I think this route is much easier than estimating the amount of water/grain ratio in a jar and PCing, and the results will be far more consistent. It's all right here:

You have to calculate that yourself for each batch of grain. Stamets goes into some detail on it.
Or do it the easy way; soak, simmer, strain.
