What's the point in persuing happiness
    #11252230 - 10/15/09 12:56 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

When i cannot stay happy forever?

Wouldn't it make sense to abandon all emotion because you can only go down from happiness, so why peruse it at all?

this life is only so long. do you really want to go through it living in sorrow??? when you move on from this life you can't take your happiness, but that doesn't mean you cant enjoy this rollercoaster we all call "life". your a smart guy...don't let the thought of life bring you down. and for me personally its the persuit of knowledge that keeps me going, and from that stems my own happiness

The higher you fly the further you fall.

Though, when you've attained a desirable state...
You have entrained your brain/heart and anchored that into your memory.
Then, it becomes easier to map your vibration's future course in the event of limited visibility.

so why peruse it at all?

You can't escape the human condition, there's no way you can abandon all emtions.  If you don't pursue happiness you will be miserable, and if you try to abandon all emotions you will be numb and void.  You have to do your best to pursue happiness.

I would say 90% percent of the people in my society do what they do not in the pursue of happiness.  Does that mean 90% of my culture is miserable?

Only by accepting (also ones own) 'sadness', one can accept ones happiness as well (and therefor 'enjoy' it).
The one is not without the other, not necessarily at the same time, but in the plays of 'possibilities'...

Just to echo what BlueCoyote said: To acheive true happiness you have to risk true misery. The interplay between the two is what makes this life truly special. Complacency will get you nowhere and nowhere fast. When someone is happy, it is because they value, cherish, and care for certain things. Don't you have anything that you value, cherish, and care for? The downside, of course, is that this life is impermanent and everything that you do cherish will come to pass. As humans, we can't but help to care and strive for things. Pain and pleasure, happiness and misery, these are (fluid) dichotomies that make being human special. Living the life of a stoic, robotic, senseless automaton is not my idea of a life fulfilled. (Coincidentally, this is my beef with Buddhism.)

Nothing Lasts, but nothing is lost.

All the best friend.

Because you are alive only in the moment. If you are happy this moment then you are eternally happy.

Was is the operative word. It no longer exists except in the mind.

Look at it this way. You can't be unemotional (even Spock was emo) so you got a choice in which emotions will be prominent.

It really is. I had to get used to the idea however before I could really appreciate it.

I was raised to believe in meaning and that we had a clue what we were talking about. :monkeydance:

It's pretty weird.  I'm born in this animal body, at this juncture in time, as this species, and have these decendants, located on this planet, in this solar system....  and i have no idea why.

Its reminds me of a game, story of piece of art.  Something so original and weird that it doesn't happen in real life.
