Writing a CMS
    #11251429 - 10/15/09 09:07 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

It's been my intention for quite some time now to develop a community based cms from scratch in order to incorporate the various ideas I have for a "counterculture" website.

Every time I actually sit down and start to think about it, I'm always at a loss as to where to start.

I'll be writing it in php w/ mysql primarily and then possibly consider getting into the messy world of ajax once I've got the main structure coded.

How do I go about starting a project like this?

Sorry this post doesn't answer your question!

With all respect, what do you gain from building a CMS from scratch?

Why not save time by finding a flexible CMS that can be extended to suit your needs? I toyed with the idea myself as I couldn't find one that I enjoyed and wasn't a trial to work with. The CMSs I tested all seemed to be complicated to customise/extend and repurpose.

I eventually found MODx which answered my problems and saved me all the work re-inventing the wheel.

I would start with Visio or pen and paper. The last CMS I created was more of a CRM and it was created with post it notes on a wall. IT's made the company 30 million to date. It all comes down to creativity now matter how technical the end product is.

this is very good advice. for however tempting it can be, building such a complicated application from scratch is almost never worth it. if you really need a very custom solution, find an open source cms and tinker away.

(ps - i wouldn't use php for such a complex application, but would instead use ruby, python or perl and serve it through http)

I would jot down your ideas, and start working with the user authentication and post threading, everything else will fall into place.  I wouldn't do much more than very basic forms/backend interaction until you start with the ajax. I recommend jQuery as this will make your life much much easier when working with jscript.
