WBS, Quinoa, Flax, etc. Experiment *pics*
    #11249378 - 10/15/09 12:03 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Well, I've finally started growing again. And while I'm waiting for my LC's to colonize, I figured I'd try out a assorted grain substrate with some extras. For the sake of keeping measurements accurate I measured all ingredients by mass. To avoid the quinoa from going to mush or getting any other problems like that, I prepared all ingredients separately.

This is still a work in progress, As I just knocked up the jar(s) today (8/14/09), but I hope you will enjoy the pictures and some messing around with some unique substrate.

The first jar I made, I had to leave the PC with the girlfriend while I was at work, and she let it run dry. So all the the tyvek burned off!

The substrate mix I used was 100G WBS, 35G quinoa, 12G flax, 3G spent coffee grounds, 7g coco coir, and a pinch of yerba mate. All measurements taken before preparation/ hydration.

The WBS was rinsed, soaked, and LIGHTLY simmered. The quinoa was rinsed thoroughly, and simmered for ~2-3 minutes. The coco coir was hydrated and rinsed. The flax was ground coarsly. The coffee and yerba mate were just thrown in. The jar features tyvek under the lid, a polyfill hole, and a self sealing injection port.

The WBS:

Quinoa added:

Flax,coffee, coir, and mate added:

Here is the first jar that got toasted (before it happened):

And my LC's... they are a lot further now:

It has been 4 days since I inoculated.

I also tried to colonize a little bit of straight Quinoa with a dash of coffee grounds. This is 6 days from inoculation:

Ive got one more jar that I just knocked up 2 days ago. Its about 75% WBS and 25% quinoa:

I will update as this progresses.

I made a few mycobags today. Still using WBS, quinoa, flax, coffee, and coco coir. I used more WBS and less coir in these bags, they will be spawned to bulk in a monotub. One is PC'ing now, the other is waiting for the PC in the fridge. Each is going to get 6cc liquid culture tonight.

I dont have a impulse sealer unfortunately, so I sealed the bags with some micropore tape, folded the end a few times, then added some gorilla tape... lets all just hope the gorilla tape holds up in the PC!

You seem to be at bit of a health nut like me. Quinoa, yerba mate, and flax are staples in my home. I look forward to the results of your experiments. Have you ever tried to use green tea or chia seeds?  There are only a handful of threads on tea and chia. I would be quite interested in chia's water retention properties although it is high in fat. Chia is loaded with nutrition. I hope you are successful in your trials it would change the way I grow. In the near future I will have to try it out. Best of luck It is nice to see somebody trying new things.

Yeah, I'm kind of a health nut... I have a sweet tooth though

I drink a 1:1 mix of green tea and yerba mate every morning, great stuff. Havent tried chia yet. Quinoa though, is like my favorite snack.

Checking out your pics it looks like you used white quinoa. If you have a chance try red quinoa as it tends to have a firmer texture that probably be better for cultivation purposes but your jars are looking pretty good. Were you able to shake them without making a mess? I think I am going to cook up some now with a little curry and coconut oil great stuff. Keep me posted.

I saw the red quinoa at the local health store. Its under a special brand name and costs a little more, but I think I'll do some jars with the red quinoa anyways. Im pretty impressed with quinoa/coffee as a spawn substrate right now. The mycelium looks real healthy, the jar is throwing out some crazy arial rhizo growth too. Ill try to get some good pictures of it, but the curvature/ warps in the glass make it difficult. Im wondering if I should try to fruit that jar invitro as is, or if I should spawn it to a little coir.

The original jar is doing good as well:

The quinoa/WBS jar:

And I figured you guys might like to see some pretty LC:

I decided to keep that Quinoa/ coffee experiment to see if it could fruit. And well...

And I spawned the straight quinoa jar, the WBS/quinoa jar, and a WBS jar I had to coco coir/coffee in those two mini tubs.

I had some spawn/ coir/ coffee mix left over after filling the tubs, so I filled a quart jar with some. Ill probably break it up once its colonized and fruit it in another mini tub.

And those red quinoa/ wheat berry jars are coming along nicely.

Did you find the red quinoa easier to work with?

Jiumyco: I did, actually. It can be cooked/PC'ed longer without turning to mush, and it is easier to get the right water content. BUT, I hate the texture of the red quinoa (for eating) At least this way I wont keep eating all my spawn substrate.

I spawned the first jar and the two wheat berry/red quinoa jars to CCV (237gcoir, 407ml spent coffee, 407ml verm, and 1400ml water). That gave me 4 quarts of bulk sub, enough to fill a 5 gallon tub 4".

Here is a family photo of what going on now. I added 4 plastic (#5 PP) pint jars that have wheat berries, red quinoa, coffee, and wheat germ in them. and two other jars I added contain just wheat berries and wheat germ.

And I know how much we all like pin porn:

More coming up, stay tuned.

I made some more jars today. Three of them are the #5 PP "twist n' seal" plastic containers, one is just a leftover jar I had (not pictured).

The mix in these is wheat berries, red quinoa, coco coir, spent coffee, vermiculite, a pinch of food grade activated carbon, wheat germ, and flax seed oils. I just finally found a source of vermiculite, so I've been able to experiment with it a bit. I think that the verm is what this experimental mix needs. The first jar's substrate compacted alot once it colonized, it did not seem to hold much water, I think it slowed colonization. The verm really fluffed up the mix, we will see how this goes.
