Major marijuana operations uncovered
    #11248130 - 10/14/09 08:55 PM (8 years, 4 days ago)

Two men have been charged in separate marijuana growing operations on opposite sides of Monroe County that authorities said yielded millions of dollars' worth of plants.

The marijuana at each site was uncovered in late September among rows of corn, but Monroe County Sheriff Dennis Pedersen said there appears to be no link between the two growers.

"It is safe to say that these are the two largest grow operations in Monroe County (history)," Pedersen said.

Charles W. Vlasak of Elroy and Robert J. Mathison Jr. of Tomah each have been charged with manufacturing THC, a class E felony. Mathison's charge is as a repeat offender.

Vlasak is scheduled for an initial appearance Monday in Monroe County Circuit Court. A search Sept. 22-23 turned up 401 marijuana plants with an estimated value of $802,000 on his properties at 33320 Owl Ave. and 30603 Hwy. WW near Elroy in the town of Glendale.

Vlasak had destroyed about 1,270 marijuana plants with an estimated value of $2.5 million on a nearby property before it could be searched, Pedersen said.

Mathison was charged after authorities Sept. 29 discovered 1,297 marijuana plants, with an estimated value of $2.6 million, at his property at 6475 Hwy. 12 in the town of Lincoln north of Tomah. The value of the plants is estimated at $2.6 million. Investigators also found two hidden drying rooms and 27 pounds of processed marijuana buds.

Mathison was released on a $5,000 cash bond after a court appearance Friday.

Vlasak could face up to 15 years in prison and Mathison as much as 19 years as a repeat drug offender.

The investigation included the state Division of Criminal Investigation as well as local law enforcement from Monroe, La Crosse, Vernon and Jackson counties.

"It is a very large grow operation. Some others have been bigger, but it is significant, especially the way in which it was in corn fields, hidden," said Jed Sperry, a DCI agent from Eau Claire.

How can they get away with that?  The plant is the only thing that makes THC not the people.  The people allowed a plant to grow - thats not manufacturing THC.

True, so true.

Hopefully a good attorney should be able to get manufacture thrown out then:grin:

class E felony wont yield anyplace close to 15yrs prison time, repeat offender or not.  If he gets even a half assed lawyer odds are he'll get it reduced to an A or B misdemeanor and do a county year (8months technically.)

Not to say that it isnt some str8 bullshit...
