Need 2 IDs please V.Think Im starting to get the hang of this
    #11246493 - 10/14/09 02:40 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Species #1

Habitat: Wood - Found on side of live tree. Some sort of oak I believe

Gills: None
Stem: None

Cap: Overall light brown with an orange tint would be the best I can describe

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Picked PNW near California/Oregon border near ocean

PS - Its a fungi not a mushroom Im assuming? Is there anything that grows like this thats worth looking at assuming what I found isnt active?

Species #2
Habitat: Wood - Found in deciduous woods, growing straight from a tree stump

Gills: The gill color varies from a white to a light pinkish color.

Stem: Light greenish? (I suck at this :P)

Cap: Brown, gets lighter the closer to the edge you get

Location: Picked PNW near California/Oregon border near ocean

PS - If these do turn out to be active there were others that were smaller. I only picked 2 because they were so small but if I were to go back how long should I wait until they are larger?

First one could be a trametes species, second possibly a mycena sp. Make sure you get the focus right in your images; detail is essential in mushroom identification. Good ID requests, btw, thanks

1. looks alot like a Trametes sp, but it could be a Stereum sp as well, I cant tell.
2. maybe a Mycena sp

nothing too interesting so far

I think you should upload your pics to the Shroomery.

So can the first type ever be active? As far as the second one is concerned any tips on taking better pictures? The macro on my camera phone is apparently terrible because it wont focus that close up

there are no known active shelf fungi as far as I know.
the second one is not active either.

your probably not gonna locate an active mushroom in the forest unless you come across a log fruiting active Gymnopilus sp

I thought dead wood was a good place to look in the PNW. What should I stick to if not that?

Phone cameras are generally not fit for mushroom photography. If you intend to take more pics, then it's a good idea to pick up a cheap digital camera.

Theres a church right down the street with a baseball field. Ive been looking but maybe its just too early? Is manicured or unkempt grass better or does it matter?

Yeah, unfortunately, the 5mpix won't do you much good if it won't focus properly. Also, phone cameras have notoriously bad lenses, what with them being tiny and all. Size does matter, at least to a large extent.
