Earthworm casting
    #1123755 - 12/09/02 01:12 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Ok.. here is my situation... made 9 brf/verm fars.. inoculated them w/ KS,... all colonized 100%, cold shocked/dunked the lil guys... then as I was in the process of creating a casing, I realized I was out of peat moss... now, as I run to the local head shop turns out they don't have peat moss, but in the corner of my eye I saw a big tub of earthworm casting, YEA!! I decided to substitute peat moss for earthworm casting, so its 50/50 casting/verm,.. what should I expect from this substitution? I haven't heard many people use casting as a casing before.

earthworm castings are used for a bulk substrate, like dung. Peat moss is used for the casing layer because its non -nutritive.

Basicly you now need to wait for the earthworm casting to colonize, then case it properly.

you should read the faq before you do things
loking at this and this could have informed you before hand.

if you mixed it up right and it's colonizing nicely then i think you should expect pretty good results. it doesn't matter if it's nutritious or not, but some people might get picky about what you call spawning and casing. in this case it might be better to say you spawned the verm castings(german accent, bad joke). anyway, after the first flush i would clean it up real good and give it a scruffing to promote healthy myc growth, and then case with coir. post your results in the pictures or grow log section as many are curious about castings lately.

I was already informed that earthworm casting is not a casing layer, but instead used as a bulk substrate... but my question was WHAT IF I used earthworm casting as a casing layer.. let it colonize and let it fruit... don't need to look at the FAQ if i am experimenting with things I haven't tried yet... maybe it will be successful and you will be looking at MY FAQ.
