So. Cal. ID Request
    #11245513 - 10/14/09 11:53 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat:
nice grass of the side of a path. theres been lots of rain for the past two days.

Gills:
light brown, tightly packed, dont hang down.

Stem:
2-3 in. light brown, same color as cap and gills. hollow, somewhat rigid, not flimsy.

Cap:
light brown, see pictures

Spore print color:
in progress. i will post a pic when they are done

Bruising:
none

Other information:
Alright so i was walking along a path picking some agaricus and i saw these sticking up out of the grass very triumphantly, an inch or two above the grass line (grass was short though). they looked like panaeolus to me at first but when i pulled the first one from the ground i could tell it wasn't because the stem was stronger and they didn't just slide out easy like foes or subbs do. so i picked half of them, put them in my box and continued. then i noticed this lovely aroma. it was coming from my hands. so i opened my box back up and caught a huge whiff of that tasty smell. it was very sweet, almost like a vanilla smell or something like that. the scent triggers something in my memory but i cant put my finger on it. but yeah anyways they smell very good and i want to eat them lol. here are some pics.

I also found a species from the inky cap family and was wondering if someone can throw some names out there.

the sweet smell was probably coming from your agaricus, some species have a very sweet smell to them.

1 - Panaeolina foenisescii
2 - Coprinellus micaceus

what characteristics make you think the first mushroom is panaeolina?

I'm not positive  but panaeolus-y and brown gills. could very well be some Panaeolus species - we'll know on the reveal of the spore print

They are definitely not foes, and the scent was definitely coming from them. i can smell both of them and clearly tell the difference.

I dont believe that at this point, just when i initally looked over and saw them i thought they were panaeolus because thats the only other thing ive seen around here that looks like that. but yeah i have no clue what they are, they are completely new to me.

I have to agree with cyanophilus. I think they are Psathyrella rather than Panaeolus.

Well heres the spore print if you can see it. id really like to apologize for the poor quality.

Its a very light brown, as apposed to the darker color of a panaeolus.
