College blues
    #11245048 - 10/14/09 12:23 PM (8 years, 9 days ago)

Are these people facking kidding me? How am I supposed to know all this stuff anyway? I can handle Algebra and Comp 1 but as far as Anatomy & Sociology goes I am so lost. Sometimes when I'm sitting there in class I stop to think "Maybe I really am fried". Lol I think my sniffer broke my thinker...

Study.  Listen in class, ask questions, go get help from teacher & TA, and you'll do well.  I've found that (for the MOST PART) people aren't smart or dumb, and that grades are a reflection of EFFORT alone.

studying is also an excellent idea but TBH my study habits make a preschooler look disciplined

no it's not broken, you just don't realize that you have to put in the time.

I've been told by numerous peers and professors that for each hour of math class you are supposed to spend 2-3 hours studying out of class.

It's very similar for other subjects too depending on your current level of knowledge in that subject.

You HAVE TO put in the time to know the material.  Just reading the text book and doing homework isn't enough in college.

If you don't want to put in the time to study, you won't make it in college.

You now know what you have to do, so do it..

I agree that doing so would be a good idea, but when it comes down to it my grades are basically okay already, and (as should be no surprise) i really don't want to do more work if I don't need to.

Studying could get me to straight-A status (at least for some classes) as opposed to the Cs I'm pulling now ... but so far that hasn't been enough motivation for me to do it.

College is pretty easy for me so far, but it depends a lot on the professor.  I've had to work my ass off for B's before and gotten A's really easy, so it all depends.

Make sure to do the reading assignments on time, it's easy to put them off or render them useless, but usually they're helpful.  And if you put it off too late and do them all at once, it totally sucks.

Also try to take good notes, write down everything the teacher does, etc.  Study from the study guides if one is provided and stay awake, you should be good.

This is my big issue with "just studyign to get an acceptable grade" (Im not personally attacking you, laserpig, just expressing some issues I discovered recently):

I used to study for hte grade, as opposed to study to learn the material.  THis was fine - it served me well my entire life...until recently.  Well, I graduated from undergrad and found out that people in my field REALLY use all that fucking bullshit I never thought would matter.  All those weird definitions that don't really apply to the test, all those quirky methods of solving this equation or that equation - ALL come into play.

SO if you really plan on getting a career in your field (as opposed to getting a degree and finding a JOB [job =/= career]) make sure you're really learning your shit.  I felt like a dumbass on many occasions, but now I'm back in school (Masters in Economics) and I'm really LEARNING all this shit -- and making a point to SOLIDIFY it in my brain.

Do good in school! :awebig:

lol it's funny -- it sounds like what you did in school and what I'm doing now were exact opposite strategies, but earned similar grades.

All I pay attention to is the actual material.
I go to class to LEARN, and the only reason I pass classes is because what I like to learn usually has significant overlap with what's on the exam.
Studying? Don't do it.
Assignments? Only if I need them to pass.
Reading? Fuck yeah! That's where all the knowledge is at.

You have to engage the material and play with it in your brain for a long time before the concepts will really sink in, at least in hard classes.  Dude you haven't fried your brain, I've tripped a bunch and smoked a bunch and I take math and physics classes, it's just a question of getting your brain back into shape.

I know exactly how you feel. The feeling overwhelmed me and I dropped out of college, haven't been back in about 2 years.
It's one of my biggest regrets in life so far.

I took a math exam today and I'm pretty sure I got at least a 95%.  It's so awesome when you do good in school.  Just practice, practice, practice.  Put in the time to study and make up exams for yourself, do what ever it takes.  What else do you have to do that's more important?  Probably nothing...

in my mind, success in school for me means being able to cut through all the information and know what you need to know.

i never study.

If you read back that post, you'll notice that I said "helps", as in [addition to what meams said about effort]. I also should have included memory, but memory can always be improved- so long as you aren't working against yourself(dropping X/getting wasted every weekend)

I have a fucking rock solid memory.  I cram for everything, and tend to learn and retain a fair bit of it.  I remember so many little things a lot of people don't.  Makes shit a ton easier.

Yeah dood I hear ya. I'm hoping to become a registered nurse and I got to know what the fuck while doing that kind of job. I don't want to half ass this shit, not when it comes to the lives of people.

Thank you everyone for your advice! What I've decided to do is to do two hours of study to every one hour of lecture.
