growing monotub style!
    #11244474 - 10/14/09 07:42 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

hey all.

im starting up a new grow monotub style. this will be my first go at it so far so before going ahead with it i wanna check with the pros.
i work in the metric system but to make it easy i have converted them all for you guys

here is what i plan on using:

63 quart tub (60 litres)

3.3 quarts of equador BRF jars fully colonised

1 qt of verm

1 qt of coffee

i brick of coir which makes 7 litres so like 7.4 qts

so i will be planning to drill my holes 4 inches from the bottom. will this be okay? keeping in mind that im planning on having no casing.

anyway thanks all :mushroom2:

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

o i see. so is my substrate going to be at the right depth for the holes? i dont see how i can really calculate whether or not its going to be over or too low for the pre drilled holes

Drill your holes then fill the tub with your un pasteurized substrate just for measurments sake, this way you'll know exactly how much you'll need for the tub.

okay yeah. i will do that. is there a definite increase in yield when casing in monotubs? can you still get a forest canopy in un cased monotub using the old leave and forget method?

Just calculate your volume.  Figure 1 block coir=8qts, if you use coffee or verm add that volume in.  Add in your spawn amount.  Now figure out how far up in the tub that amount will put you.  Cut your hole at that point.

FYI you really want to make sure you are getting 4+ inches of sub in your tub for best results.

Pet supply stores, sold as reptile bedding.  One block of it will expand to 8qts of substrate when a gallon of water is added

" 3.3 quarts of equador BRF jars fully colonised "

I hope by 3.3qt you mean about 15 brf cakes.  Halfpint cakes that have a verm barrier are actually a little less that half a pint.  So I'd say that 4 cakes would equal a standard quart jar which is only 2/3 or 3/4 full anyway.  So if a recipe calls for 3 quarts of spawn, I'd call that 12 brf cakes.
Anyway I just looked again at your substrate ingredient amounts and I think you should use a minimum of 15 brf cakes.  best of luck.

well it depend s on your location...if your house is too dry then you want less holes....if your house is too hot....then you want more holes....it all depends where your at..and what preference is best for your surroundings..... i use only 6 holes in mines..... 2 on the wide sides above the spawn/sub level..and 2 on the narrow sides just below the lid.......your gonna have to take consideration of the variables if you want a smooth transition!!:bobmarley:

Please +REP if i've been of any help... thanks!!!

agreed you have to consider variables my house gets dry as hell in the winter so I only use four holes...

yeh.my apt is dry.....and plus its getting colder.....so itll prolly take longer but bigger fruits..lol...but definitely a high factor of dryness....sometimes its better making less holes..so thenif you need to add more...you can.....as oppose to having to much and using tape to cover the holes which becomes messy:bobmarley:

yeah it does, he uses metric but also gives the conversions for the people who don't use metric which is the majority of this community.  I don't see your beef.

I'm not so sure about that.  Most teks I see here don't call for metric comprehension at all.  They're all about quarts and halfpints and such.  I think most of the users on this site are A-mare-i-canz.
