First bulk grow, casing.
    #11244782 - 10/14/09 11:18 AM (8 years, 11 months ago)

So I'm using a coco cour/horse poo/straw substrate.  I have 13 half pint jars fully colonized and im ready to case.  The way I was told to do it was put an inch layer on the bottom (using a rubber maid) then use a cheese grater and do a thin layer then another inch of substrate and repeat this a few times.  Then make the last layer of cake really thick and put a thin layer of substrate over that.  Does this sound rigbht?  I cant find a tek anywhere for it, I was just told how to do it by an experienced grower.  All in all the casing should be 3-4 inches thick?

"Casing" is a whole separate process. You are spawning to bulk- making a bulk tub.

Mix or layer, there's people who do either or both. Whatever works for you is good.
You might be better off to shred up all the cakes into a clean bag before you get too far into things.

A casing is a thin layer of non-nutritive material that is placed on top of a spawned to bulk substrate.
It is also sometimes placed underneath a bulk substrate.

The jars that you have are filled with spawn, so called because you plan to add them to a bulk substrate.

If you were going to use what is in your jars to grow fruits without adding the material to a bulk substrate, then the material in your jars would be referred to as a substrate.

What you have described will work to produce fruit bodies. Make sure that you provide GE, (gas exchange), just as you have done with your spawn.

I recommend allowing the bulk substrate to consolidate before you introduce to fruiting conditions.
:goodluck:

How much of a problem will it be if there are a few small pins in my jars?  It took a good while to get all of them fully colonized, so a few of them have been waiting for a good 5 weeks.  I think it would be best to just cut them off with a sterilized knife?  Does 1 inch substrate between layers of mycelium sound ok?

They should actually pull off rather easily. As Doc-T said you can mix or layer. I layer mine. I'm not sure how thick the bulk sub is between layers. What I do is try and make it even. I add two jars of spawn to four jars of bulk substrate. (That's a high ratio, but that's my business right?)

This gives me a total of about 3.5-4" bulk substrate depth.

I also do not like to finish my layering with spawn as I like to see when I reach 100% colonization.

And for my casing, I can do a 50/50 coco coir/vermiculite mix correct?  Can I just boil this mix as there is no need for nutrients in the casing? Make the casing about 1/2 inch thick?

I would just leave them. I mean, at least you know it's growing something.

I've yet to see invitro. I figure I wont cuz' from now on i'm using grains.

Just use straight verm as your casing. Coir is nutritious and you will get overlay if you try to use it as a casing.

Coco-coir and straw both have nutrients that the mycelium will feed on. Neither of those materials make good casings.

A crumpled, wetted piece of waxed paper that you change everyday would be better.

What a casing does is provide a micro-climate at the surface of your 100% colonized, consolidated bulk substrate.

In my humble opinion, if you are providing the proper environment with your fruiting chamber, a casing is redundant and unnecessary. I do not use them.

I know I risk getting slack from the other growers but...  :2cents:
