#2 looks like Panaeolus subbalteatus (active).  It must print jet black. If not, then it's some other panaeolus sp.

Bummer i took the photos for #2 a little while ago when i was just learning and didn't think it looked like anything i was after. Then after learning a little about 'subbs' i thought it looked pretty similar but still didn't think i would've stumbled upon them right away in my backyard. Lesson learned they won't escape me again

Sweet thanks for the ID's on 1 & 2.
Found this today a day after a quick storm in same lawn as #2 above

Any ideas? My guess is another Pan species maybe even the same as #2 but not too sure.

Another Question/ID [Re: German Kahuna]
    #11278534 - 10/19/09 06:36 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys found I found a few more around in the same lawn, the one in the pic below I was assuming was another 'foe' based off its appearance but its spore print is definitelty brown and is very obviously brown when compared to the spore print from species #2 above which is jet black. Some questions I have are do 'foes' sometimes have black prints and brown prints? Does this change what #2 might be? If these two species are different what are some of the things you guys look at that distinguish the two? Still very much learning and appreciate all the knowledge you can give and thank you in advance.

The stem on this one reminds me of a lawn subb. I found once.

He said it looks like a Pan. cinctulus. I personally strike a distinction between someone drawing resemblance to an object and flat-out calling it that alleged object. EDIT: The same rule of Thumb for Pan. prints is used by "the experts" so why 'criticize' him on that too?

:foreheadslap:

Foes and subbs look extremely similar and have different spore prints, so I said nothing drastic.  That mushroom has already been identified and we've moved on.  I have no idea why you quoted me.  I even said:

...and the experts already came along for the other shrooms.

ANYWAY, I wouldn't call the other prints jet black either, at least from our end.  They look black where there is heavier spore deposit, but they could be very dark brown and indeed look brown in the lighter spots.  I'm sure the spore print can very, at least in how dark the brown is.  The two shrooms are notoriously hard to tell apart macroscopically, but I'm sure GK or Alan can fill you in on some tips.
