Photography editing and LCD monitors
    #11241820 - 10/13/09 09:31 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I've noticed a problem with editing pics on an LCD monitor, especially my newest one. How can you tell if the brightness is correct on the image. If I lean back in my chair the image is really dark but if I sit upright the lighting is fine. Yes, I usually edit my pictures sitting upright.

Any tips on this one? Short of getting a CRT monitor (is that even possible any more?), how will I know people are seeing the same thing I am once photo editing is done?

The best thing to do in that situation, IMO, is to not use a color profile.  I know it sucks, but if you want what you see to be the same thing everyone else sees at all times, thats basically all you can do.  Basically some browsers don't display color profiles properly, IE in particular.  Which is highly annoying to those of us who work with image/graphics.

Edit: Check out this link, very informative: http://www.gballard.net/psd/go_live_page_profile/embeddedJPEGprofiles.html

You mean turn off color profiles in LightRoom when I'm editing them? I've always used sRGB and from what I've read just about every browser out there can do sRGB color profile.

What I'm more curious to remedy is light/dark portions of the screen depending on the viewing angle. Bottom of the screen is light, the top is dark (to a VERY slight extent, but I notice it).

Yeah i'd just turn off color profiles.  I know (not sure as of recent, it may have been corrected) that IE didn't display color profiles correctly, and of course its the most widely used browser so we're kind of forced to cater to the lowest common denominator.

I don't think the viewing angle problem can be corrected, if I'm understanding you right.  I see that all the time and I think it just depends on the quality of the monitor.  If you're really serious about image accuracy, getting a quality monitor and keeping it calibrated is a must.
