Boletes in the Nick of Time!
    #11241594 - 10/13/09 07:03 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Almost missed 'em before the bugs got them ALL! We found this area last year while looking for huckleberries. Temps were below freezing at 4000 ft. overnight and a lot of mushrooms suffered. I think we got the last ones of the season at that altitude. There is probably snow there now.

The first potential keeper looked good from above but was bug riddled.

This keeper was just adorable! The bug holes on the cap were mostly superficial and we just cut that part out.

You could spot this big boy a mile a way. He was delicious smothered in butter and olive oil and grilled!

Unfortunately his bigger brother was worse for wear.

Another meaty king weathered by frost and ruthless bug attacks.

These Amanitas were everywhere too mixed in with the boletes. Not sure which variety but they look like a classic muscaria. They seemed to still be a little more weather tolerant than the boletes.

Bolete Bounty. Doesn't take many boletes to fill my kreel!

Next year we will have to go a little earlier. The huckleberries were all gone too. At least we saved a few boletes from freezing to death. What we didn't grill we gave a nice warm dehydrating...much more pleasant than freezing.

Beautiful Boletus!

What species of fir were they growing with?

Noble fir seemed predominant.  Might have been some pacific silver fir mixed in. Besides those true firs there was doug fir, hemlock and possibly mountain hemlock. A real alpine lake and meadow environment.
