another newbie question.
    #11241511 - 10/13/09 08:50 PM (8 years, 9 months ago)

I'm using a plastic tub with 2" of perlite on the bottom, I haven't drilled any holes in it yet and I'm using a cake tin filled with water and an aquarium heater for heat.

The aquarium heater seems to be heating the thing alright and helps humidify the chamber, but is it a contamination liability? Is there anyway I could keep it clean or do I need a new heating method?

Thanks in advance.

Drill holes in all 6 sides and use more like 4-5 inches of perite

Its cheap easy and has no standing water in it

No need for the heater. Having water attracts contaims

my temps run around 55 - 74 at the moment though, I kinda do need it what with winter rolling around the corner.

It would seem that with the heater I don't need as much perlite. Condensation is a sign you've got it about right, right? Well it's got a lot of that.

do the shotgun FC and put the heater outside the FC with no water in it.

Nope condensation dosent mean its always alright. it could mean the inside of the FC is warmer then the outside, not an indicator of your RH

But it's practically raining in there.

Also, am I supposed to leave an aquarium heater out of water? I don't know if you're supposed to.

Would converting it into a heatbomb work? I imagine that wouldn't pose a contamination risk.

heating your FC is an invite for contams heat your room its in.

the reason it looks so wet in your Fc is because its 55 - 74 outside the FC and prob in the mid or higher 80's inside your FC with that heater thus making condensation not to be confused with humidity

Unfinished basement, it's always cold down here even when the furnace is heating the whole house. It also gets way too cold at night for me to want to risk it. I want the temp to stay fairly constant and using a heater seems like the easiest way.

Also, I now recall using a calibrated hygrometer a few weeks ago to test it out and I remember the reading being 98 before the crappy thing broke.

I think I'll have to go with the heatbomb since it removes open water from the equation. It gets seriously cold here at night and winter's not even here yet.
