Psychotria Alba, weird growing tip
    #11241256 - 10/13/09 08:13 PM (8 years, 9 days ago)

What is this?

:wtf:, it looks like it's branching or mutating.

Looks like terminal bud damage, possibly due to low humidity. Axillary buds may be coming through. I wouldn't wager much on that hypothesis without a better picture though.

It's from insufficient humidity and/or lighting.

That happened to mine last winter, once I got it out into full sun and good dense FL humidity, it exploded with normal growth.

I've been treating it mostly like my salvia. Pulverisations from times to times, watering once a week, and it's a few ft away from my HPS, so it gets strong indirect light. I got it recently so it might just have started getting adapted

Yeah, but I get the feeling like it doesn't adjust quite as well as Salvia to low humidity, atleast mine didn't seem to.

It was doing the same thing too, and those leaves dont get better

Damn, that's a shame, because it's a really interesting plant to grow

That it is.

See about getting a humidifier or something to help 'er out

Once you get that set the leaves will start looking normal again.

mine does the same thing when I bring it indoors for the winter.  It even lost it's leaves and grew them back over the summer.

I'd really like to get this one settled and growing strong, thanks for the help . I've read albas are hardier than viridis too.

This is normal, the new leaves are born curled up and then they stretchen after they get bigger.

My viridis always started out like that and unfurled into healthy leaves. Very, very slow growing, at first.

The process speeds up, as they get taller.

They hate low light conditions, in my experience, but will eventually sent lots of shoots, back up, from the dirt.

Mine's not coming in, this winter, unless a prolonged freeze is in the forecast. Then, it will go back out, as soon as possible.

A supplier told me that ice only caused peripheral damage to his plants, if any.

I don't consider the leaf curling/twisting to be normal but it happens.  I attribute it to low humidity with my  suspected P. alba (purchased as viridis) as when it was a smaller plant living in a more humid environment, the leaves would come out looking pristine and without any curling.  This past growing season I forced my plant to make do without any humidity enclosure and now it's getting more severe curling.  It can also fray around the margin of the leaves and/or have holes in the leaf from the curling.  A friend of mine has a P. alba that is mostly neglected with terrible looking curled leaves but it still flowers readily and grows at an approximately normal rate.

My P. Viridis does the same thing when it sprouts new growth.  The leaves will eventually straighten out but may have damage.  I have a cheap $13 home-made humidifier next to'em and it seems to keep this to a minimum.

I keep hearing about that happening.

Why is alba sold as viridis, and how can you tell the difference?

The leaves are a different shape and structure.

I'm still not quite sure why they sell alba as virdis, maybe it's because alba is supposedly more vivacious

Most people really can't distinguish them, so it might not have been done on a bad will.

I think its because viridis is said to be stronger than alba, but in my experience their strength is all very similar (alba/carthaginensis/viridis).

I'd say viridis is mostly a collection plant because it grows so slow that makes it a poor choice for a tryptamine source.
