Agar Agar Question ~ Will This Stuff Work? ? ?

My wife ran to an oriental store near by and picked me up a few boxes of 'Agar Agar Powder'. I read the ingredients and it says
Quote:
INGREDIENTS: Sugar, Agar Agar
Nutrition Facts: Total Fat/Lipides 0g Sat. fat 0g Cholesterol 0g Total Carbohydrate/Glucides 11g Dietary fibers 0g Sugars 10gProtein 0g
The box says that there's 170g of this product. I assume that 10 of these grams are sugar.
Do you think that I can still use this powder and add some Extra Light Dry Malt Extract to this stuff?

That is the type of agar agar I wanted, but my wife said that they only had THIS powder.
Does that agar agar contain sugar?
I searched online, but couldn't find nutrition facts for Gulaman agar agar.
All of the nutrition facts that was was able to find ... none contained sugar.

You may wish to supplment, possibly with a protein source.
No agar agar has no sugar just agar but what you have will work.

Potato dextrose agar (FDA M127)(abbreviated "PDA") and potato dextrose broth (abbreviated "PDB") are common microbiological media made from potato infusion, and dextrose (corn sugar). Potato dextrose agar is the most widely used medium for growing fungi and bacteria which attack living plants or decay dead plant matter.[1]
Potato infusion can be made by boiling 300g of sliced (washed but unpeeled) potatoes in water for 30 minutes and then decanting or straining the broth through cheesecloth. Distilled water is added such that the total volume of the suspension is one litre. 20g dextrose is then added and the medium is sterilized by autoclaving at 15psi for 15 minutes.[2]

Plain sugar isn't the bes thing for myc it has been super refined. I do agree that the agar powder will probably work tho. Just make the PDA following something like FastFred's recipe just add more powder to compensate the addition of the supar

Well what the deal is there is sugar in the agar, they use it in the manufacturing of the agar, so for it to have 10g of sugar is ok it is the way it is made, also the potato has natural sugars too. That is part of making PDA.. You have potato, dextrose, agar. When you make it using the grocery store tek you don't need to add sugar because you will get it from the agar bars/powder because it's not lab grade agar its made for cooking, as well as sugars from the potato.

Agar Agar powder from the oriental store will work in a potato/dextrose/agar mix.

I dont think the sugar is natural. Agar is seaweed extract. The sugar in it is added after the fact. But yes the sugar for the tek comes from the potatoe

Found this online
"Seaweed also contain natural sugars such as sorbitol which is chemically extracted from red seaweed, and mannitol which is chemically extracted from brown seaweed. Seaweed also contains mono sodium glutamate (MSG) used extensively in the fast-food industry, but chemically extracted as well."

I will be adding Extra Light Dry Malt Extract to this agar agar powder.
I was just worried because of the sugar that is in it.
So just to recap ... you guys wouldn't hesitate to use this stuff?

Even if the agar didn't have sugars in it they would be added anyways from the honey so it really make no diff if the agar has sugar or not
