Amanita pantherina?
    #11240606 - 10/13/09 04:30 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat:
Found in a park of mixed conifer and deciduous trees in north louisiana on the ground alone.

Gills:
White gills with some reddish bruises

Stem:
Stained whitish stem about 3.5-4 inches, bulbous base, hollow stuffed

Cap:
3.5-4 inches brown with brown spots. this confuses me as i dont know of any mushrooms with brown spots.

Spore print color:
don't know.

Bruising:
doesn't bruise for me but has some red marks on stem and flesh where bugs ate it.

Other information:
not much of a scent if any at all.

Looks like he says that because of the VERY obvious red bruising that occurs, thats my guess.

Amanita Pantherina has more of a brownish tint to it. Yours has a red blush tint to it, making it a Amanita Rubescens notice how the gills stain red also.

Well that's what i was leaning toward, but the fact that it doesnt bruise for me (all those stains were there to begin with) caused me to doubt it. especially based on the fact that its in an area with some very red soil and that could have been a contributing factor.

Nah. Those stains are there to begin with because A. Rubescens naturally bruises that red color, that's why they call them blushers.

The base of the stipe in Amanita species is a very important identifying feature and describing it in detail helps a lot with identification, a good reason why we collect the whole specimen with the base intact!

Amanita amerirubescens

Quote:

Why do you say that?

One reason is the very un-pantherina like stem base.

And of course the red staining.

It's fine that you cut it open as long as you collect the whole specimen and don't leave part of it in the field!

One last question here, is it normal for the spots on the rubescens to be that dark? in other pictures i've seen they're all lighter than that.

I guess the spots get darker in age.  Its possible that you have A. flavorubens, check a younger specimen.

I thought that also, Amanita favorubens will have yellow warts and the flesh under the warts will be yellow!
