Something is eating my T3
    #1124024 - 12/09/02 06:45 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I have a big tub of dung/straw currently on the first flush.
Strange things have been happening.
Some mushrooms abort as soon as they break the casing surface.
They don`t just abort but become black on the caps and a strange pussy white substance begins forming.
On some of the large mature mushrooms it would actually seem that something has been eating into the flesh.
Looks like worms or something.
It would seem that some kind of bacterial enfection has set in.

Strange thing is that this doesn`t happen with all the mush.
And now all the new pins all look fine and are growing without a problem.
I had a feeling that heat might have caused the bacterial spotting because I got home on friday and it was hot!!!
So I fanned the lot and cooled the eintre room.
It seemed ok and the terrible pussy shit on the aborts stopped.
SO while I harvested part of the first flush I suddenly noticed what I explained as something eating the stems.

If anyone has experienced this please give me an idea what it could be or what could be causing it.
I`ve never had a bacterial infection like this before.

Have you noticed any little gnats flying around in your grow space at all?

You can get infested with some sort of fruit fly that lays eggs and the larvae eat your mushrooms. I'm not sure exactly what type of fly it is but I had them once and they are a HUGE pain in the ass. ONE little tiny gnat gets in there and lays some eggs and you can end up with a huge infestation.

Look very closely (possibly with a magnifying glass) at your casing and see if you see TINY litttle white things crawling around very slowly.

If so there is no saving them. Just toss it before they can breed more in your house. You don't want any of them to mature or you are in real trouble.

Karen

I also think it sounds like some kinda insect. You could be right, because it sounds like fruit flies to me.

I can tell you now that the subsequent flushing has resulted in pretty normal fruit.
As far as fruit flies go there isn`t a single one.
And it`s not like this is the first bulk casing of this kind that I`ve done  not in the least.
So I know to look for gnats and anything else other than mycelium or mushrooms.
From what I`ve been able to guess, last week it was overly hot and humid and this adversly affected the mush while I was at work.
I`ve been upping the fanning and dropping the humidity and temperature and so far things seem to be far better.

I wouldn`t go suggesting every little problem should be thrown out.
Half of these problems will go away and you`ll kick yourself for wasting a good casing.

I thought the exact same thing but I still haven`t seen a single Fly.
So I came to the discision that it must have been verticulum.
I think this bacterial infection resulted from extreme temperatures last week.
As the flush has progressed and the temperatures have cooled more things have improved.
I also try to leave the lid off for 3 hours or so at night and totally dry the tub out.
Then I mist and fan before I go to bed.
Now it seems that growth has increased and minimal bacterial blotch.
