Psilocybe Cyanescens? Poisoning?
    #11239164 - 10/13/09 02:17 PM (8 years, 7 days ago)

HI

I'm a newb.  I'm also paranoid.  I picked these mushrooms, I'm 99.99% sure they are psilocybe cyanescens.

Chanterelles on the top of second pic, pls ignore

After reading more about poisonings and lookalikes, I'm wondering if I might be slowly dieing right now.....

I already ate em. Got pretty high, I ate them fresh and still slimy. About three mushrooms at once. Not intense like cubanensis but pretty mellow.

Not ill effects, 72 hours later. But after reading about Cortinarius spp. I'm freaking.

I guess I'll know in three weeks.

nice pics huh?

NEWB question:  My buddy says that the slime is the best part, and when they dry out they are substantially weaker. Has any one only eaten the slime? or fresh vs dry? just wondering.

First person to alleviate my paranoia, wins.

They are NOT Psilocybe cyanescens. I am very curious how you ended up with that 99.99%. They are not even close.
You are lucky to be alive. Sheesh...
And yes, Cortinarius sounds about right.

those are not psilocybe cyanescens they are a species of cortinarius. Not all cortinarii are toxic, many are of unknown edibility though some are fairly bad.

more info on your find soon (after i get out my key)

God damn, people, stop this misinformation spreading, please!
This mushroom did not TURN blue, the stem IS blue. Also there are countless boletes that bruise blue but aren't hallucinogenic.

Those are Cortinarius.  They don't look much like Psilocybe cyanescens at all.

You won't die though.  The deadly Cortinarius are rare in the US and there are no recorded deaths from orellanine on this continent.

One way to check is a black light, the deadly toxin will flouresce blue.

your mushrooms are Cortinarius vanduzerensis. Edibility is unknown but if it really has been 72 hours since you ate them I guess we know now..

OP:  don't feel too bad that you are getting flamed.  You played a very dangerous game, but I think you realize that now.  Live and learn, don't be discouraged, and keep taking pictures and get the ID before you eat anything.

Oh, I didn't mean to say that THIS particular mushroom would have killed him, just saying that he ate something he assumed was a cyan. What if he had eaten a deadly Galerina instead which looks a lot more like a cyan?

Oh no, I am starting to feel strangely uneasy.

So first symptoms are flu-like? kidney pain etc? I guess I'll be looking out for that....

I'm also going to take one into the bar, put it under the black light....

Probably placebo.  Your mushroom is in Cortinarius section Myxacium, while the deadly ones are in Cortinarius section Orellani.

:banghead: You really need to be careful. Mushrooms are nothing to mess around with and next time you may not be so lucky. I dont understand how you were so confident that was Ps. cyanescens if you can look at a picture you can see it is not even close. Be careful and educate yourself before trying to identify and consume wild mushrooms.
