I so want to eat this mushroom
    #11238496 - 10/13/09 11:55 AM (8 years, 12 days ago)

.
Ok, like, I had to reason with myself to not just pop this into my mouth when I found it, it smells good and looks real yummy

Habitat:
Local park on the grass (So. Texas)

Gills:
Creamy grey... erm, not attached? (I'm trying to figure out if I got the difference right between attached and not, please let me know if I am wrong)

Stem:
about 2 1/2 inch, fibery and strong but hollow. same color as cap, just a little darker cream on a part of it. same color outside and inside (a bit more white inside)

Cap:
maybe 3 1/2 inch if it was all flat open. As is, like 2 3/4 inch (can I use metric? its easier), off white darker towards the center, smooth, has a bit of a nippley dome shape.

Spore print color:
Marroon

Bruising:
It doesnt

Other information:
Smells REAL good and teh cap is much heavier than I thought it whould be, like, its about twice the weight of the agaric species around here that are of more or less the same size. Maybe its not important, but it really caught my attention that it was so top heavy with such a brittle stem. (I even thought the bugs had gotten to the stem but I ripped it open and its all clean crisp and without bugs.

Sorry crappy cel phone pics, no new camera yet

Lookup some info on mushroom poisoning and the horrible death that follows... it may help you reason with yourself in the future.

Good job coming for an ID first.

Well, just out of curiousity, i wonder would the toxins in the mushroom that make it poisonous to humans, have the same affect on a squirrel.

No.  Squirrels and deer can eat most deadly mushrooms with no negative health consequences at all.

Not Inocybe, per spore print color, gill color, shape of the cap, and shape of the stem.  Maybe Stropharia.

the bad thing with the deadly mushrooms is not the death itself but the intense suffering. I would not live the last days of my life like that.

yeah, first of all, i am OBVIOUSLY not a "dude" and second why would I want to hurt a poor squirrel. Even if you think its ok, it may not be, i wouldnt feed anything to an animal that I wouldnt feed to a person

but the toxic still stands, right? eesh. ;_; the shroom world would be a better place if I could eat all of them. heheh

I've come to just getting the spores and spreading them around everytime that I find a shroom I like but cant eat. I figure if any actually grow at least I get to look at them

I am not sure what it is so I don't know if its toxic.

More pics of this species in more stages of development would help ID it.  It would also help to have habitat shots and pics of the spore print.

well, I can take pics of the spore print and habitat, but I only found this one. I looked all around and it was the only one like it.

There where a couple of what I thought were red belted polypores on a tree and two of those big ugly puff look-a-likes a few meters away but other than that no other shrooms in the area

I cant get another print. I even tried spraying it with water and nothing.

The color was defenetly rust or marroon. If there was another color I could use to describe it it would be dark pink, but its really more like rust

I found an old pic of part of the place where I found it
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v52/NoirNancyboy/flashfotographyandscreams/Scenesand%20Random/HPIM2068.jpg

it was just on the grass, not close to anything else in particular. Few feet from the sidewalk, several feet from the closest tree.

more info: No bruising at all. I am used to shrooms at least bruising a darker shade of the cap color, but this one doesnt at all it seems

I looked in my book and found nothing like it. Which seems odd to me. Can anyone recommend a better field guide other than the "National Audubon Society" field guide? I've found like 2-3 shroomies so far that dont look like or fit the description of anything in that book.

Maybe it was made for a very different climate?
