Roommate's Ignorance to the Law

So my roommate told me a story about his weekend, thinking that I would be just as pleased as him upon its conclusion. I wasn't.
["x"] when "x" = what I'm thinking at the time
Long story short, he was back home (in another state) and was out at 1:30 in the morning with a friend, rolling a joint in a park [dumbass]. They see a cop roll by with his light on so they immediately start the car up and pull away [dumbass]. Then, they miss their turn, so the roommate decides to pull a 3-point turn in the middle of the road [really? were you in that much of a hurry with the joint ready to be sparked in your car, dumbass?]
the cop had turned around, sees them in the act, and lights come on [why is the motherfucker smiling?] They get pulled. As they're getting pulled over, my genius of a roommate instructs his co-pilot to toss the joint out of the window [right next to where you pull over; smooth criminal] Then this is the story he tells me, essentially verbatim:
Roommate : "So the cop comes up and says 'You all have any drugs in the car?' I say 'no' [good start]. Then he finds weed in the backseat.." [wait, what?]
So I stop him there and ask him how the hell the cop searched his car--did he ask for consent? Here's one of the most awful misconceptions I have ever heard:
"Well, if I had denied consent to a search, then that would have given him probable cause to search me."
WHAT? Step back for one second and think about that statement logically. You can't; it doesn't make any sense. At this point I'm starting to worry about the competency of my roommate, who smokes and drinks daily in our apartment.
Throwing the joint proved perfectly pointless as the cop found the rest of the eighth in the backseat anyway.
On top of all of this, he never gets into any trouble. The cop, apparently cool as hell, tells the kids "Listen. This stuffs going to be legal in 5 years. You seem smart enough so I'm not going to cause a lot of trouble over this. Just don't mistake my kindness for weakness" and peaces out. Don't get me wrong, I don't advocate any arrest stemming from the use of marijuana; however, it would be comforting to feel as if my roommate had learned something from his (in)experience.
I guess the point of this thread is to remind everyone that many people with whom you associate are likely not as versed in their rights as yourself.
My primary concern is that this kid is going to be in our apartment one winter day, chain smoking cigarettes and taking bong rips and a cop shows up at the door. Roommate, in his infinite wisdom, would probably open the door right on up, and the smell=probable cause to search the premises. I have my own charges to worry about if they make it into my room. Keep in mind, though, he is not privy to this information and will not ever be.
I explained to him many of the intricacies of laws concerning search and seizure, but my fear is that all of my warning has fallen on deaf ears. I'm tired of living with this kid enough as it is, and don't want anything worse to come of it.
Any advice for a fellow shroomerite experiencing the roommate woes?

Make him watch this:
#
Quiz him weekly on his knowledge of civil rights and police procedure.
Make sure he knows that he can never open the door if its the police. Tell him that you don't care how mad the cops are, make them break it down.
If he doesn't display the ability to learn and retain this information, get a new room mate that is more trainable.
Keep your room locked. This sounds silly, but put a sign on your door saying its your room and no one else may enter. I think that does confer some legal protection if he is smoking bongs and then decides to open up the door.

I once had a cocaine/benzo addicted roommate that repeatedly tried to stab me.
I used to sleep with both hands on my 12 gauge and the door of my room barricaded closed.
After 10 or 20 minutes of trying to get me to "come out and party" he'd stop and let me get some sleep for work the next day.
I got dem roommate blues
You'll be glad you moved out, if that is how you solve that problem OP.

I think we need a sticky thread of all the good videos out there explaining rights and how to deal with cops.
There's the video Alan posted and the "citizen's guide to police encounters", etc..
How about it Alan?

Done. Are there any other videos I should add?
I really like the first video (with the lawyer). I could watch it again and again and not get tired of it.

Looks like a great start. There are a couple Barry Cooper clips that would be a good addition. I'm thinking of the one where he's not opening the door and telling them to call him. I don't have a link though.

shape up or ship out... That would be my advice. There are plenty of roommates out there that aren't dumb. Find a good one.

Dumbass is lucky enough to have been stopped by a cop that likes to toke.

It is never a good idea to open the door for the police. Much better to lock it and let the police open it. Usually they do not. If you do, they will bust you for whatever they can. (they tax you for being stupid and opening the door)
