Chanterelles in TX!
    #11236863 - 10/12/09 11:12 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

After the drought we had in June, I feared this day would never come.  Not this season, anyways.  As I was walking home from work late this afternoon I saw...

Chanterelles!  Cantharellus lateritius, specifically.  Believe it or not, this is someone's lawn.  Someone who says, 'Fuck it!' to the suburban lawn ethic.  Well good for you, buddy!

This is a closeup shot of a couple of chants and a couple of bolete buttons.  There are literally thousands of these boletes coming up here now, but they all stain blue.  I will never, ever, ever eat a blue staining bolete... again.

And just for fun, Calocera cornea growing from what I think is an ash tree stump.

They've been sprouting up all weekend next door here in Louisiana.  I'm getting excited.

Southeast, Houston area.  It's been raining quite a bit here the last few days.

Yes, I know!  My first wild mushroom experience was one of those boletes, and I spent the next three days making frequent bathroom visits.  I guess I need some assistance from local, experienced hunters.  For now I'll stick to chanties and other easy to ID mushrooms.

Huhwhat?  Are you kidding?  You're up in Austin according to your profile.  I'm 99% sure that anything I find down here on the coast you can find up there.

Just west of you is the area where the mysterious fall morels can be found.  If you ever happen to find one, print it for me!  I know quite a few people who'd love to get their hands on a fall morel print.  Check out how huge the morel cult threat is in the G&MM forum.

Good question!  I have no idea.  The epsiode of Scientific American Frontiers with the cultivated morels had them suspend a morel upside down over a petri dish.  I guess something similar would work?
