Questions Regarding Shotgun FC's and Monotubs?
    #11237290 - 10/13/09 12:48 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

First off I have been using the search engine for the last 2 hours trying to find a definite answer for 2 questions with no luck :frown: So I decided to start this thread.

1) So with the shotgun FC the humidity  comes from the water evaporating from the perlite but my question in how does a monotub get its humidity and how do you raise the humidity?

2) Can you fruit a spawn to bulk tray/trey's in a shotgun FC? Lets say for the sake of conversation I have a shotgun FC that is 4' long by 2'6" wide could i fruit 2 trays that were say 1'6" wide and 2' long?

LOL I hope that makes sense. Its late and I'm a little medicated..lol

Thanks in advance for your replies!

gets it's humidity from the well drained perlite what happens is holes in the bottom allow air through the perlite and mixes with warm air since warm air rises it is pushed out of the top holes make sense?(you raise humidity with more perlite).

you can use bulk trays you will just need a pretty big tub since you want allot of surface area for the perlite to do it's job.

All I know about monotub humidity is that you dont need to mist it too much and it maintains humid enough.
and IMO your better off with a bunch of smaller bulk trays in an shotgun to help the perlite do its job

Shotgun FCs are very versatile .... you can fruit cakes, trays of bulk substrate, blocks of substrate ... etc.

To get the most performance out of a SGFC I like to keep the cakes or trays off the perlite so it has the greatest wicking surface area possible:

like this .... with a pvc and light-grid shelf.  The SGFC is raised off the ground (supported on blocks or whatever) so air can circulate underneath the chamber.

HOWEVER,  If you can get your monotub dialed (moisture content of the bulk substrate and FAE), they are hard to beat for production.

Look at the volume of substrate in the two trays.  I could get a third tray in there and have even more substrate ....

BUT .... imagine if the SGFC were a monotub ...  and imagine if the perlite were all bulk substrate.  That's a lot of fruiting substrate and very efficient for the size of the chamber .... the whole footprint.

A daialed monotub is what I would use for production.  A SGFC is nice for smaller, varied projects.

Hope that is understandable and helpful.

Good luck.

here's a SGFC with a tray of bulk PE. should of raised it up a bit off the perlite like Rico, but still worked pretty good eh??

How to dial a tub?

..... hmmmmm ....

It seems trite to say, "By trial and error."  But at the risk of being trite ... I'll just go ahead and say it, "By trial and error."

Everyone's ambient humidity is different.  Everyone's air-flow is different (I am outside in the wind.  Other people are inside with fans.) Fans on timers.  Fans pointed right at tubs. Fans pointed at the wall and the air-flow bouncing around the room. Big Fans, little fans.  Eight 1" holes, six 2" holes, fourteen 1/2" holes .... 1/4" holes .... no holes ... tightly packed polyfill, loosely packed polyfill, no polyfill, micropore tape, tyvek ..... misting, fanning, no misting, no fanning.

Many, many variables.

What works for me:  18 gallon monotubs, eight 1 1/2" holes packed 'not too loose, not too tight' with polyfill, good moisture content in the substrate, wind blowing, indirect natural sunlight. Watch and adjust ... and sometimes just ignore it and neglect the hell out of it.

These mushrooms are really very easy and forgiving ... they grow themselves .... and at other times, maddeningly difficult.

Good luck to us all.

same here only I have 6 - 2" holes prolly packed with more poly than you to adjust my humidity.

You dont have to dial a shotgun in, or a monotub. If you build them right they work right off the bat.

If its built as per the tek, and maintain it like you should they work.

Monotubs rely on moisture evaporating from the substrate to provide RH, they are incredibly simple and very effective.

Heres a flush from 1 of my mini dub tubs

As every growing environment is different, some fine tuning is in order.
If you have chosen not to, that's fine. But most growers would be well advised to examine conditions carefully and adjust if needed.

The sgfc has holes on all sides (sides, top, bottom), and the bottom holes bring in air that goes through the perlite, which once it moves to the surface and into the chamber, creates the constant humid environment.  As it heats it moves up (hot air rises), and eventually out, bringing in more air through the bottom.  With large trays that take up quite a bit of surface area, the airflow and humidity are not the same as with cakes.  Some things may need to be adjusted, such as raising the tray in the picture above, using exterior fans (or both).  It all depends upon the size of the tray, or trays, ambient temperature in your room relative humidity in your room etc...  People grow in different conditions, so there isn't a universal approach.  Watch your temp and humidity readings inside the sgfc, and you tweak and adjust accordingly.

Why do users (according to many users photos), have the cakes sitting on foil on the perlite? Why not just sit the cakes directly on the perlite? I would think that the perlite woud reverse osmossis the entire cake to prevent dunking with each harvest, would it not

The perlite will leach the moisture from the cakes as it itself dries out.  Also gravity moves water/moisture down, so if there is no water/moisture proof barrier between the two, the cakes are in fucksville.  You need jar lids with no holes (as they came from the store, with no innoc holes pierced through them), or, the simple solution for those that have holes in our lids, small squares of foil.
