Any idea Chingon why people still use SGFC when the poly MonoTub is better and sterile with poly?

Ok I'm not getting it, what is the difference between a sgfc and a monotub? From what I can tell the only difference is that a mono tub has less but bigger holes stuffed with poly and a sgfc is just a tub without the poly with smaller holes and every 2 inches there is a hole so at least like 20 holes with a sgfc and like 8 max big poly filled holes with the monotub.

But again what is the difference other than a mono is better because the air is more controlled in design of the holes regarding air flow and the poly makes it sterile to prevent contam, but again, if it is better than why use the sgfc at all?

The monotub is specifically for bulk substrate - one large growing medium, for a single type/variety of mushroom, filling the entire bottom of the tub, end to end.  The humidity is primarily controlled by the substrate/cake.  This will give biggest yields and require less maintenance than sgfc.  If the cake goes bad, there is a good chance that the entire grow is a bust.  If caught at the right time, the area could be cut out (depending upon the type of contamination) and the rest of the cake flush.

Sgfc is for trays and brf cakes.  The humidity is controlled by the perlite at the base, and holes throughout provide for air intake/outake 360 degrees, which creates constant airflow.  The sgfc is higher maintenace, but easier to dial in for most people.  Multiple varieties can be grown easily, simultaneously.  If something goes wrong with a brf cake or several, or a tray, as long as it is caught early enough, the rest of that flush (whatever is remaining in the chamber) can still produce.

Both have their places, and I don't consider the monotub to be better or more sterile.

Monotub:  Not everyone is looking for one strain with a massive flush (or 5) and have pounds of mushrooms all at once.  Not everyone wants to run the risk of time and energy spent on what could potentially set them back a month+ after mold/contaminates could make them scrap the whole grow.  If attempting multiple varieties, these tubs do ultimately take up quite a bit of space.  This space also needs light evenly (energy/money).

Sgfc: There are people who grow multiple varieties at the same time, want to test test clones to see what works and what should be scrapped, and also those whose climate and relative humidity (without external forces such as heating/ac) favor the sgfc.  This is also a great way to test, in on a smaller scale, how a variety grows or grows best prior to taking the plug into a single cake (test medium, casing layer, thickness of both, colinization times etc..).

Some people like the Hobbie as well, and simply want to try different varieties in different conditions.

Chingon your my new favorite mentor, much better than doing nothing but wasting time by commenting stuff like (dude this thread is 7 years old man), nice when fellow members help each other instead of getting so drugged/shroomed/high to where they just randomly comment on the age of threads rather than what the thread is actually about. Lol. I'm not mad or complaining, it's getting high that this is all about anyways after all is it not.

a SGFC is more for cakes, although either one could be used for cakes. Depending on how you want to go about it. You can fruit them in a monotub if you wanted. also the reason I said its a 7 year old thread is because you know, its a 7 year old thread and im sure those users got their answers a looooong time ago.

fruiting chambers aren't sterile by any means. by the time you put cakes/trays/tubs into fruiting they are contamn resistant enough ( unless you have dirty spawn. (bacterial) which alows other things like molds/bugs to take ahold.) that it doesnt matter where you spawn it. I spawn my monotubs in my kitchen :P along with birthing my cakes.

So based on the points we see in brought up by Ziran and Chingon,

What you guys are saying is that it doesn't do any good to use the big bag of poly I already bought when I un jar my cakes and put them in to the tub, correct? Does it hurt? It must slow FAE since it is a filter.

And to confirm Ziran and Chingon both agree that more holes are better than less holes? Because one has got to be better than the other over all for FAE or some other factor right?

And just to be certain I understand this correctly, it is ok to have perlite above a few holes so that the air can come up through the bottom of the perlite to get to the top right?

And thank you everyone for clearing up the curiosity about foil on the perlite. This is my first time growing shrooms, I just want the best guarentee for success, contamination scares me, I lost my last inoculation to mold. This time all 12 jars are looking nice and snow white, oh all jars are of the same syringe/strain.

And from what it sounds like ,if I stuff the holes with polyfil like I have seen others due to their tubs it won't help none and is just a waste of time after 100% colonization right?

And finally to confirm from what it sounds like, unless I got this wrong, it is best to have some perlite above the wall of the holes that are near the bottom to increase humidity right?

Thanks again for all your help/wisdom and putting up with me and all my newbie questions.

I am new to this forum and saw the thread on the first page, so I clicked on it.  I wasn't aware that it was an old thread until you brought it up.  I am aware that your post was not directed at me, but having said that, sometimes people's questions can get answered better with what currently exists in any given thread and any new information they may seek in reference to it.

When you use the search feature for most topics, there are quite a few threads that pop up.  Perhaps if wasn't considered to be taboo to bring up old threads, there would be fewer in the archive, and the ones that did exist, would have more information and questions answered.  Again, I am new to this forum, so I don't know protocol, but less seems like more when those looking for information havent found the answers (in name a number of threads here).  The topic and title of this thread did pertain to the questions that were asked.  I don't believe wwfjdraw needed to create a new thread for his questions, as they were on topic.

This post is just my thoughts, and perhaps not how this site operates.

Or actually since Z posted it first, then C quoted it (in agreeance I am assuming), I guess ""I Third That"" instead of ""I second that"" is more politically correct. LOL )

I have another odd question (sorry but I really want to know as I am still learning), is more holes better or less holes? Because one has got to be better than the other over all for FAE or some other factor right?

So from what it sounds like, a 360 25+ hole design is actually the better one for FAE when compared to a 8 hole max tub right?

And from what it sounds like ,if I stuff the holes with polyfil like I have seen others due to their tubs it won't help none and is just a waste of time right?

You will not need the poly for the sgfc, but keep it for if you later decide on a monotub.  Some people use it for their grain jars or liquid culture jars as well.  Any way you go, hold onto it because it will have a use at some point in time.

If you are going with brf cakes, use a sgfc.  There are teks available here, on youtube, Google searches - everywhere.  Drill 1/4" holes 2 inches apart on all sides of the tub (4 sides and bottom, then do the same on the lid).  Perlite, once saturated then drained so it isn't dripping water, will go on the bottom (depth depends upon size of bin).  Place fully colonized cakes, after dunk and roll, on a water barrier (solid lids or foil squares) on top of the perlite.  Mist (not directly) and fan several times a day throughout fruiting (everyone has different schedules for this).

As far as more or less holes, don't deviate from the sgfc's design.  It just works.  No more, no less.  Trust it.

In the sgfc the perlite goes over holes on the base and on the lower section sides.  The air that goes through those holes travels up, through the perlite, and this gives it the constant humidity (from the moisture in the perlite).  Make sure to elevate the bottom of the sgfc a few inches so air can travel freely through the bottom.  Do what you can to not cover holes with whatever you elevate it with.

Stuffing holes with poly is necessary in monotubs.  You are doing cakes, so just do the sgfc tek for now.

I'm guessing that the backslash existed prior to my editing, but it was at the end of your full post.  I deleted that and attempted to respond to on paragraph, so it showed up in the odd format.  Lesson learned.  I'll get the hang of this forum eventually.

This forum in general is the hardest I have ever navigated, I mean no disrespect to the person who designed the UI. GrassCity And FuckCombustion for example have been heaven in User Interface with an attractive navigation (less cluttered by comparison), although I admit the knowledge found here has been more helpful then there member-wise.

Darn, I have to tell you, I was really excited about having poly in the holes, it made me feel like I was going to increase chances of success with a job that I consider to be so easy, it seems like no work at all, (god putting poly in to holes seeming almost like fun, I feel like data scanning for life forms, happy over such an easy task) (how sad has my life become).

Even drilling on the bottom? Man with the perlite, I would think that would be over kill since misting is necessary, I wonder if one could prevent misting, by either drilling holes on all sides except the bottom and if a air pump tube submerged in a jar of water could avoid misting altogether as seen here:

https://sites.google.com/site/everythingfungi/mushroom-cultivation/indoor-growing#TOC-Fruiting

So if I do both perlite and the jar of water with the air pump, it should make sense to not have to mist it right?

the sgfc was designed by some guy who worked 12 hour shifts and still had a life outside of work. Its as automated as it gets. He wanted to mist as little as possible. and thus the SGFC was born. air pumps and such are no bueno.

Im guessing it could be older than that?
