Screw 'Sustainability' - And Cheer Up About It
    #11236473 - 10/13/09 12:04 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

http://www.scientificblogging.com/howard_bloom/screw_sustainability_and_cheer_up_about_it

"In Screw 'Sustainability' - And I Am Here To Tell You Why we discussed the fact that Mother Nature is a bloody bitch. She is the mother of catastrophe. She has nurtured brilliant innovations like cells and DNA but she has also given us 142 mass extinctions, 80 glaciations in the last two million years, a planet that may have once been a frozen iceball, and a klatch of global warmings in which the temperature has soared by 18 degrees in ten years or less.

Mother Nature has sunken the pleasant habitat of land creatures to the bottom of swamps and has lifted the havens of sea creatures --ocean bottoms -- to the mountain tops. She has very seldom given us a Garden of Eden, a green and sunny utopia in which she and we live together in harmony and peace.

Nature tosses us challenges and dares us to survive. More properly, she challenges us to thrive.

What’s more, evolution is all about breaking Mother Nature’s rules — defying gravity when a lizard stands, denying buoyancy when a fish controls its depth in the sea, and saying “no” to gravity when a bird has the audacity to fly. That audacity is Mother Nature’s way of feeling out new paths of growth and radical new possibilities. How do we know? Birds have been paid off big time for their insolence. There are four times as many species of birds as there are of us land-lubbing mammals. Each species represents another victory over nature, another corner of nature’s maze turned into a new niche. Each triumph is another of nature’s own victories in the breakthrough biz.

That's why talk about 'sustainability' today is riddled with problems — and with the seeds of self-defeat. The lowest periods in recorded human history have come when society tried to maintain a status quo."

A must read for anyone with any feeling what so ever about environmentalism. It is humbling to know that even when it comes to creating an uninhabitable environment for humans, nature is better then us

Also, the link to the article preempting this one is broken... not sure when they will fix it.

So because Mother Nature gives us a hard time we should go "to hell with it" and ruin the future of our offspring?

Its not ethical for us to make that choice for them.

Evolution is not about breaking natures rules. EVERYTHING is nature. how can we be separate from nature? that's foolish.
There is something to be said about the mindset of living without or above nature... we can't be without nature!
Victory over nature? that doesn't make any sense

haha I actually started to skim through th article and agree with some things but began to think that maybe the term "sustainable" is a bit too broadly defined.
Is it NOT evolving? Is it evolving in a conscious manner? Is it evolving in a way that reproduces equally what is destroyed?

"We are using less than a quadrillionth of the resources of this planet."
He talks about how we haven't learnd to use all the rock and what not beneath our feet.
I see forests around me paved over so that we can put up CVS's and Walgreens. These forests have food and medicine to offer that we once knew a lot more about as a species. Instead these shops that use HEAVILY REFINED corn, soy, and petroleum products for food and medicine are put up.
So I don't think we need to relax and think we have rocks to refine for energy. Mountains are being destroyed. Mountains that took 1000's of years to get there.

I'll finish the article later...maybe it says something in rebuttal of my statements

Yea he is using it really broadly, but I just love how he articles it all so I wouldn't dare change/explain it.

Seriously, my impression of this author, Howard Bloom, after reading the synopsis is that he is a douchebag.  What point does his book serve?  You'd think he'd at least have some understanding of the natural sciences, but no; he tries to do this weird psychoanalysis on bacteria and 'mother nature' in some absurd attempt to foist a case against sustainable development.

All his arguments just seem to be emotional pleading.

Yeah this planet has been through worse and can take care of itself.
Sustainability is still essential for those who desire independence.

Question: When has mother nature defeated another race of humans? Birds, lizards, blah, blah, blah. Humans. one of a kind. you are one.
