What if everything I believe is a lie?

Would that make me feel any different?

Depends on two things.....

First, do you believe your beliefs are a lie?

And if so, how attached you are to your current beliefs.

Its should, because lies are intentional and that would imply you are the victim of conspiracy the likes of which I couldnt even fathom.

Do you think that as long as we have beliefs, we may have fear in them being extinguished?

Why would it have to be a conspiracy?  What if I just got confused early on?

Because lies are intentional.  They dont depend on you simply getting confused, they depend on somebody else knowingly deceiving you.

But if thats not what you meant, and you mean just you getting confused then that is different.  It would be hard to think of some situation where everything you believe is not true.  But if it were just somethings, it should make you feel different if only for the simple fact that you now have different ideas and different information.

Hmmm..........

Thats an interesting question.

I think...... the dissolution of a belief is a scary process.....

I wasnt adopted...... but I can imagine what a mind-blower it is to the kids who the fake-parents dont tell them until they are much much older...........

Everything you thought was wrong.

But.....

In the end, we just re-arrange the pieces.........

So, even if there is fear in losing a long held belief...... it is also a fear that motivates us to obtain new beliefs.

I think we are stuck with beliefs. We could even replace the word belief with "stereotype" and narrow down the arguement, but I believe, we would gain the same result.

Fear is the motivator of intellectualization. :headbanger:

How do I know when a belief is true?

Thats the VERY problem tho...........

"what if I am wrong?":tongue2:

ULTIMATLY..... like to the very core, I dont think it is possible to know.

Thats why it is called a "belief". :tongue2:

Beliefs make sense to me...... They help us make sense of the world.

Hmmmm.... just thought of this right now.

So, Beliefs help us make sense of the world.

But, if that belief REPLACES our view of the world....

Then we will obviously be fearful of losing it..... We are so accustomed to seeing things in this one way........ saftey...... security..... truth.

BUT, if we can hold those beliefs ever so lightly...... always leaving them "up for grabs", While we may NEVER know if ANYTHING is true at all, WE remain fluid and adaptable against the fear that is motivating 99.9% of mankind.

I think that if I believed that everything I believe is a lie simultaneously, this would probably rock my world for a while, until I replaced those beliefs with new ones or update the old ones.

But with regards to finding out that one/some of my beliefs is false can be quite a turn on for me (not in a sexual way). I get a real buzz from it for a while. Like when I found out that pain wasn't a universal human experience or that "werewolfs" exist (they aren't actual werewolfs as per folk legend, but rather a genetic rarity Hypertrichosis and it is a socially debilitating condition, but it explains perhaps where the legends started: click here for an example)....

Well, what is there to fear but death?

And, what does it mean to fear death?

No because emotions are based on goals and those are based on beliefs.

It would make no difference to how you feel.

Why not just dissolve the old ones and not replace them?

Do you really beliefs to function?

I mean, I can fry an egg just fine without knowing dick about whats going on.

Depends on the belief.  It much easier to show a belief is false then to show it is true of course, because the former only requires one case while the latter requires every case.  Regardless, I thought it was assumed in your premise that you found out all your beliefs were not true (or even, lies) and how you did that was not important.

I really dont know.....

I am REALLY wanting to go with the "leftover evolutionary survival trait" explaination.....

..... But I have a feeling there is more to it than just that.

Well, you're right, I suppose if it happened all at once then really the foundation would be taken out with the supports.  But I hadn't considered that when I thought of my question.  Do you have an idea of what I was getting at?

Well, if we don't know anything about death, then we can't fear death itself, we have nothing for reference.  What we actually fear are things in our life, whether it be the loss of our possessions or personality, loved ones, or the pain of death.  A person only runs from a tiger if they want to live.

Depends on the belief....... I believe that there is a difference between an esay, medium, well, hard, sunny up, basted, poached, sunny down..... boiled....... . . . . .

BUT, I also realize that in actuality.... it is -just- an egg.... with heat applied.

BUT , With that strongly held belief and dedication to my purpose, I can fry a much better egg.

Now..... if that belief in said egg frying is causing me to reject new beliefs about egg frying..... or has led me to believe that egg frying is a special gift only given to me, which I must now share with the world before the Great Chicken returns.............

I might have to re-examine that belief. :tongue2:

Everything in moderation.

Not knowing something.... or the admission to it..... is experienced like death..... the limit of my ego.

But I would agree, it isnt the gain of death that is feared...... but the loss of life( which implies all possesions as well )

" With that strongly held belief and dedication to my purpose, I can fry a much better egg."

Is it the belief, or your hands and practice?
