Food on the road with no expenses?
    #11234878 - 10/12/09 08:22 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

I'm broke, I will be on my journey soon, so what's the best way to have food, or what food is the best to obtain and store in a vehicle?  I'll have a cooler, but I'm not going to have much money for food on the road (premade stuff) so I'll have to cook my own meals.  I hope to have enough for a beer and a cup of hot clam chowder on the coast though hehe.

Just bring heaps of high calorie food that requires no refridegeration.

Rice, oats, dhals, pasta... whatever.

How do you expect to pay for gas let alone lodging if you can't afford food.

All depends on what happens in the next few days.  If my buddy doesn't come with me then I'll have probably around 40 dollars.  If he comes with me then he has 150 for food.  I hope he comes.

i liked those big cans of bush's baked beans, about 1.50$ a piece, used to eat half for lunch and half for dinner with tortilla chips.

Yep, Dhal is your best bet.

Buy a small quality pressure cooker (only need a few cups worth), cut down all your cooking time to under a 1/4 of what's usually needed.

lentils usually only take me 30-45 minutes to cook, beans ~ 4 hours.

beans however with a pressure cooker ~ 1 hour for 3-4 cups. lasts me a week too.

$150 total, for 1-2 weeks.  Gotta make it last.  I want to try to find a job up there, or some temp work, then get a place to stay.

A whole new world was opened up to me when I discovered dhal's and other cheap dishes.

I was used to spending $5-$10 a meal, now I can get like 1000 calories in a dhal and rice for like 50 cents :vaped:

No wonder all those buggers over in indian and china are living on a few dollars a day.

I go buy a big ass bag of mung dhal for $3 and it's like 50 servings worth.

$150 / 14 days = $10.71 per day

You could buy peanut butter, 100% whole wheat bread, rice, beans, tuna, yogurt, oats, etc.

$40 + $150 = $190 divided 14 days is $13.57 per day divided by two people is $6.79 per person per day.

I've lived on less.  If nothing else you could ask for money for food out at the road in front of the grocery store.  I see people doing that all the time.

Dumpster dive really discreetly at walmart or grocery stores.

That stuff is not REAL bad, and it's free!

Plus you can busk for quick cash.

Spend 20 minutes a day outside some place with a guitar and a pleasant look (You catch more bees with honey than you do with vinegar  ) and an open pizza box or shoe box/guitar case and BAM!  You've got 8 bucks to buy food with.
