Best Book for IDing actives in the PNW
    #11234702 - 10/12/09 07:53 PM (8 years, 13 days ago)

Heeellllooooo! so a buddy of mine is starting to get into mushroom hunting this season and asked about books on the subject. he has a few really old used/beaten up books from the mid 70's that have no pics, only decent drawings.he wants to buy pretty much the best mushroom book out there(preferably for the PNW). i told him to just become a member here but he doesn't have internet. so! i was wondering if anyone could suggest a good mushroom book that shows actives AND edibles, he is interested in all mushrooms not just actives. but keep in mind he needs one that's also got a lot of info on actives. so any suggestions would be great!! thanks!!

I own that book and it sucks real bad.  Its rehashed, old, disorganized, and full of errors.

I guess Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World is the best book written on actives.

Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest looks really interesting, does it have any active species in it?

It's not bad but pales compared to Stamets' work.

Overall though it's been helpful since I moved here, mainly for inactive species that I've never seen before.

It briefly covers Psilocybe cyanescens, P. aurantiaca, P. baeocystis, P. ceres, P. montana, P. pelliculosa, P. semilanceata, and P. stuntzii. It also goes over a couple others, but briefly.

In general terms it is a very good book and with TI assistance I think its a perfect helpmate if you live in WA, possibly the rest of the PNW. Good photos although in the next revision they should enlarge them just a little more.
