Could I use a HPS light to grow my mushies its pritty small im not even sure on the wattage it has about a 3.5-4CM socket size and im not sure if it will need a ballast but im pritty sure its based in the red spectrum of light could I use this for pinning, fruiting, etc.

Yea you shouldn't have any problems with a HPS light it produces close to natural sunlight

Just go to the store and get a 6500K energy efficient "daylight" light bulb. They are like 3.99 for 20watt. That is what is recommended and said to work best by many.

Edit...If HPS works than use it (haven't used them myself)..but alternatives are cheap and use very little electricity.

most likely youll burn your myc.

if you keep it far away, and its as low a wattage as you think (75w/150w?) then it shouldnt burn anythin

natural daylight is all theyll need. can u set it by a window where it gets daylight, and breeze?

An HPS light should work, but I guarantee the flourescent 10-watt bulbs at walmart labeled "Daylight 65000k" work.

Light doesn't grow mushrooms, using an HPS seems like major overkill to me.

Could be put to more productive uses!

IMO lighting is the lest thing you should be concerned about my FC's are in a pretty dark room that doesnt get too much light plus I live in canada so don't get as much light as most americans do.  I never have problems with shrooms that don't get enough light.

From my understanding, it's a biological trigger for them. They don't actually feed off light so wattage doesn't matter. Just color range.

Yes I understand that but I want the largest fruits I can get on this flush and I dont have the 3.99 to spend or the urge to goto wal-mart to buy one of those florescent bulbs -
The Light is pritty far away from the FC my roof is about 10feet the FC is at the bottom and the light Is at the very top well over 6-7 feet of space b/w em -

Im still not sure on the wattage its small but is giving off alot of heat im sure it wont go above 80 I just wish to know that since this light is a red spectrum will it be good for giving me larger mushies.

That HPS is the wrong light for this. Again we go here with weed growers trying to multi use their lights. You need to use a floro with a 6500 k bulb. This has more blue light in it, compared to the oranges and reds in a HPS, which will not help pinning. Plus, you will not have a high electric bill that comes with HID lights. Just stick to what works and follow teks that are out there. Why fix something that is not broke?

Not so fast....i am not a good mycologist and can't explain this "biological trigger", but i think the current line of thinking (according to Stamets, RR, others) is that mycelium does absorb some kind of energy or something from light, we are just not sure what or how yet.

Remember, the science of mycology is still in its infancy; we can't make wide ranging statements like above without acknowledging that fact. ~P~

Blue light is what they use. Plus it tells the fruit bodies which way to grow, they go toward it, to best get the spores releaased in a way to ensure good dispersal.

they absorb radiation from natural sunlight (says Paul Stamets and Terrance McKenna) but Idk about cfls.

light does not tell them which way to grow, gravity does, they arent plants remember.

looks to me that they are growing towards fresh air?

Im not trying to argue the science of this, Im just regurgitating info from the pros.

I can post a link of the info but you can find it in the search also.:getstoned:
