Prep to Bulk
    #11234641 - 10/12/09 07:41 PM (8 years, 8 days ago)

Okay, so I have sucessfully ground up one pint BRF into 5 little bread-loaf pans of cow poo, but now it's freezing outside and I don't want to go looking for poop in the snow.

So, I was wondering:

Exactly what type of grain do you use.

Birdseed? Millet? What brand? Common from Wal-Mart?

Also, are there any substrates I can buy in a nize, cozy store, that are cheap? Could I use fertilizer?  What do you use?

I'm gonna do 12 pint jars (more jars, less size, less eggs in one basket if there are contams) and bulk them to something in baking trays 2-3 inches thick, allow them to colonize, and fruit in monotub type layouts with no casing. Sound like a plan?

I'm not sure how easy I can find coir. We do have one small pet shop. I'll have to go look. I always avoid actually asking in case someone's in the know.

I just picked up a 25 lb bag of cow manure compost for under $3.

Might be able to find coir at walmart if they have a decent pet section.

All your growing supplies are either in a pet store or the gardening section of a super store..

You can find WBS and COIR in a pet store.. The WBS is in the bird section and the COIR is in the lizard or reptile section..

Gypsum can be found at a gardening center.

I love how people don't understand the meaning of the word rural. I'm luck to have a walmart within range. Fortunately it looks like everything needed to grow mushrooms can be obtained there.

It's usually easier for us ruralites to get the necessary materials.

I hate it when I ask the "associates" in a store where I can find stuff, like coco coir, and then they immediately ask me, "What are you using it for?". I always immediately reply, "What difference does it make?".

Then they look at me kind of funny and take me to the product.

Sheese, mind your own business dillweed. What are you making $8.50 an hour? Help me find the crap and get off my ass.

OK had to use dictionary.co# newbie you screwed me up talking about rural then talking about being in a store.  I live in a pretty big city(3.5M) There is only one large chain pet store.  DO you have any idea how hard it is to find anything to spawn too?  Coir some other grower in my city goes and buys the pet store out on me all the time.  POO good luck on that one.  Even straw  ppl say walmart has straw.  Not up here they don't.

I had an idea. Because it's Halloween time, check out all the pumpkin displays. They usually use straw bales to set them up on.

I bet you could get a few bales for free just by asking when they tear down. Hey, if you take it, then they don't have to clean it up! (There's also Thanksgiving and then Christmas tree lots, all baled straw users.)

Also, check hobby stores, like Michael's. They sell small bales of straw for projects and such.
