Black/dark purple gills, help with ID?
    #11234385 - 10/12/09 04:58 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Picked these just today (noob; 2nd time out hunting) they were in a cow/bull/horse pasture growing out of slightly tall grass nearby some dung... Im in the Northeast u.s

Stem: white; hallow
Cap: light brown dark blackish purple near margin
Gills: black

Any info in the right direction would be awesome, and highly appreciated.. I've been looking over shroomery religiously the past few days and finally set out and grabbed what i think to be something good. Thanks guys!

cap looks like another kind of coprinus, but thats jsut my guess, idk for sure, the purplish black gills sound about right, along with the thin hollow stem.

Sorry, no good. You won't find active mushrooms on cow dung in your locale.

it wasn't ON the dung, just in the pasture, dung was nearby... was actually looking for shrooms in the dung but had no luck, these were under the shade of a tree, in mulchy-leaf debree / tall grass

Pan. subbs prefer horse manure and hay.
Gymnopilus like wood, as do any psilocybes that grow in your area.

*Edit: The mushrooms in the op are Coprinellus micaceus

Louise, what species of actives do you think ill most likley find in my area? I came across a ton of odd and colored mushrooms in the woods nearby growing out of dead trees, moss, and mulchy substrate yesterday, but when i came back to identify them i realized i was underestimating the diffuculty of that task... So today I went into pasture where diff animals frequently graze, and this is what i came across that to me anyway looked promising

Search "which mushrooms grow in my area" there is a list of species on the Shroomery that will help you to research those mushrooms.:goodluck:
Gyms are probably your best bet though

You are looking for Gymnopilus that grow directly on wood and bear an orange spore deposit, Panaeolus cinctulus (subbalteatus) that grows in manured hay or grass and bear black spores, or possibly blue staining gilled mushrooms that bear purple/black spores that grow in the woods (possibly near rivers and streams).

Happy Birthday, Time ED! :bongload:

:stoned2:  :thanx: And I know in Northeast PA Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata are being found. Those and Gyms are your best bet. It may be a little cold for P. Cinc.
