Are my substrate jars contaminated?
    #11234405 - 10/12/09 07:01 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Hi.  First time grower here... My substrate jars have been inoculated for about a week and a half, and all of them have a dark blue circular growth surrounded by a white ring.  Is this a contaminant, or is this normal?  I thought mycellia were supposed to be white / light blue.

thank you!

looks like contams to me. you shouldn't have any color except white after innoculating. looks like trich. no good

Welcome to the community.  :rastamon:

That is most defiantly bad. Take any jars that are like that out of the house and empty them outside in a bag. That's mold, and you don't want to get the spores in your house.

Clean them well after that, dishwasher should take care of it.

Myc is supposed to be white, kind of fluffy looking. Any color other than white is pretty much bad. And light blue, or blue-green is contams too.

I thought a slightly off white blue-green tinted patch of myc was normal so I let it grow for a few days. I opened my jar one day because I was VERY suspicious and I saw it was very blue-green from the inside of the jar. Tossed it. You should toss that cake faaar away, wash out the jar, boil the jar, and start over.

make sure you're doing all you can for a sterile environment and pressure cooking/steaming properly. Good luck.

Thanks guys.  My liquid cultures seem to be faring better, so it hasn't all been a wash, though I'm pretty disappointed that mold got into all of my substrate jars somehow.  I bought them online, so either they messed up or mold spores somehow got in during inoculation...

Anyway, thanks for the advice!

i boil my bad jars before i open em. then i KNOW all the mold spores are killed and cant contaminate my workspace. even though i open em outside i still take every extra step i can to eliminate contam

Yes, that jar is for sure contaminated. It happens, dont be discouraged. Try again and it will eventually pay off. and then it is so much more rewarding of a hobby.

Oh, I'm sure.   I'm going to make my own jars this time, just to save money and feel like I'm in control of the whole process.
