Shaggy Mane/Parasol?
    #11234129 - 10/12/09 06:08 PM (8 years, 9 months ago)

Looking for some help with my first possible edible. My son spotted it  on a nature trail near a pine tree. It has a shaggy top and meaty stem. It also bruises brown where touched. Thanks in advance for any and all consideration. Now attempting to print on foil....

Not a shaggy mane for certain.

Find some more mature ones and spore print them. It could be Chlorophyllum molbdites, which would suck pretty bad to eat.

Cut the stipe. If the cut surface goes through a color spectrum of light yellow through almost blood red within 2-3 minutes it's likely Macrolepiota (Chlorophyllum) rhacodes. A more mature specimen and a spore print would help, however.

Thanks you guys. I would never have begun looking for edibles if it were not for this site and people like yourselves. You provide an invaluable resource that has given my family and I the courage to pursue this fun hobby. As for this one, I'll print it and toss it. Again, Thank You.

take the mushroom thats opened up and put it on tin foil with a glass on top and hope for a spore print. white would be chlorophylum rrhachodes or shaggy parosol (good to eat, but upset some peoples stomaches minorly) and green would be chlorophylum molybdites (toxic, dont eat) good luck =)

That is Lepiota Rachodes the Shaggy Parasol. I have a patch of those around here they are SOOOOO good sauteed. They cook down a lot tho. Enjoy!

I'm not sure where you are in the PNW, but I've never found a confirmed sighting of C.molybdites in Western WA.  (At least of the couple of Mushroom clubs on the West side of the sound, no one has any recollection of any.)

I wouldn't just assume it isn't though, because on a good day, it would just make you really really ill if you happened to be the first to find one

I would wager it's C.rachodes.

Location says PNW. Do you usually see C. molybdites that far North? I am of the impression that it likes warmer climates. All I can say that I've never seen a live C. molybdites in my life here in Germany, but I know the grow in the Mediterranean region.

I have never seen C. molybdites here in CA, but I know they do occur here on hot days.  Since this is PNW the chances of it being molybdites are pretty low, but I'd still print it at first.

Here is the current distribution map:
