conflicting info on effect of heat on psilocybin
    #11233227 - 10/12/09 01:31 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

i have read many posts explaining that heat destroys psilocybin and psilocybe therefore it is better to dry mushrooms naturally or on a very low heat. If this is the case, why is it shared that one of the best ways to ingest mushrooms (only sure with P. semilanceata)is to brew them up in a tea by boiling them for so many minutes. Surely this would destroy the active chemicals and make them weaker (according to the first statement), can anybody clear this up for me? cheers

Time is a factor. Drying them at a high heat for hours or days is much more degrative than heating them for 10-15 minutes. Secondly though you shouldn't boil the mushrooms you should mix slightly below boiling point water with them and let it steep, don't keep it on the burner. It honestly probably will be ok either way though, I've heard of people cooking mushrooms in food w/o problem.

Oxygen is worse than heat... and under 200F should be no problem.
