another question, i hit in "Coprinellus micaceus" into the almighty google and came up with "http://www.mushroomexpert.com/coprinellus_micaceus.html"
but it never said anything about how poisionious it is so im guessing they will be safe right, and they non active

they contain the poison coprine they are safe to consume for most people but it suggested that consumption of alcohol within a few days of eating these guys before or after can stimulate a diverse reaction. i have consumed these guys on several occasion with no adverse reactions. eat only fresh young specimens preferably on the day of harvest.

Yeah, if you are going to eat them, eat only the young specimen and forgo drinking alcohol for 48 hours. I've never had them and I reckon their culinary value isn't all that great. I've never heard anyone talk about having a spectacular Coprinellus meal.

To the best of my knowledge, c. micaceus does not contain coprine. C. atramentarius, on the other hand, does.

It doesn't? Well, it seems that there are conflicting opinions. I've read both and am inclined to believe that they don't, but as long as there's doubt it might be better to assume that they do. That said, I wouldn't eat them either way, not only because being German I cannot be without beer for 48 hours.

Since Psilocybe cubensis are native to the Transkei region, they should also occur in Kwazulu Natal. Any cattle or horse pastures are good. Also be on the lookout for Psilocybe natalensis (because I really want a print of those!)

In the sources that I can find using a quick Google search, I can only come up with c. atramentarius as a coprine-containing coprinus species. Some caution seems to be in order, however.

Btw, doesn't cactu eat coprinus and psathyrella mushrooms from time to time? Possibly, he's aware of any alcohol-mushroom interactions if his mushroom consumption is based on local Mexican knowledge.

Yeah. Like I said, I am not really too concerned, but much better edibles are readily available to me and I really like beer so at least for me the temptation to consume them is very low.

Exactly. Coprinus doesn't appeal to me very much; at best, they taste rather bland and they tend to get very slimy when cooked.

@Aimemailaddress: be sure to bring a camera when hunting; It'd be great to see some cubes in a native SA habitat! Back in the ol'days, we used to have mjshroomer around, posting pics of local Thai cubes, which I liked very much. Other than that, it's pretty much all Florida we get these days. Make sure to get some nice wide angle shots showing lots of scenery
