Newbie with a few questions
    #11229692 - 10/11/09 11:30 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Ok, so I prepared and sterilized six jars, according to the magic mushroom grower's guide found on this website, only to find that only 3 had holes in the top big enough to let the syringe needle through and worse still 2 jars only had 1 hole big enough and the third had two.

So I went ahead and inoculated all three as best as I could and it's been about 3 weeks.

The mycelium has grown about half-way round the jar in both the jars with one open hole and did not colonize at all in the one that had two (weird, right?)

I've been incubating them with an aquarium heater placed in a fairly deep aluminum cake pan which is enclosed in my fruiting chamber set-up. my FC doesn't have many holes for gas exchange and is covered with a comforter both to protect it from light and to insulate the plastic bin.

Now, my questions are will the mycelium colonize the entire substrate even though it hasn't been inoculated in all four holes?

and is my incubation set-up doomed or will it work? Winter's coming and the basement is cold enough as it is.

Also, I left the foil lids on the jars up until now, some feedback is appreciated there as well.

Thanks this site and this forum has been a great help getting started.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

It will colonize, just might take a little longer.

What are the temps like in you basement? In most cases, incubation is not necessary.

Take off the foil. You have a dry verm layer, right?

the mycelium will colonize the whole jar, but it will take a little longer.

your incubation setup is fine, but what temp is it normally at?

as far as the foil goes, you can take it or leave it.

My basement runs anywhere from 60 at night to 70 in the day. I haven't really measured the FC's temp but I'd say it's at 74 give or take, probably a bit more over the heater, where the jars are sitting.

Yes, I used a dry verm. layer. I should leave the mason jar lids on though right? I mean it's not fully colonized yet.

I appreciate the quick responses, BTW.

Yes, leave the lids on, but take the foil off. It will inhibit GE.

You might need to incubate, idk. I have not had to deal with temps that low.

no need to protect it from light....my house temp is about 65-70 colonizes just fine maybe 1-2 days longer but it works in your favor since contams love higher heat.

I have my jars on a bookshelf during the whole time it is colonizing.light is a very minor pinning trigger the most being a combination of fresh air, light and lower co2 levels etc etc.
